06/03/2017 12: 02IBM has everything ready to start giving commercial use to their quantum computers. Through a new division called 'IBM Q', they seek to build new equipment in less than ten years that can be accessed over the Internet and that can serve businesses that need to process a lot of information. Its use outside the controlled environments where it works now would allow it to develop medicines, analyze viruses, create artificial intelligence or combat massive computer attacks on the Internet in a much more precise and faster way. What is a quantum computer? What characterizes a quantum computer is that, instead of working in binary code (the ones and zeros that a computer uses), they do it in qubits. These 'quantum bits' can have two states at a time (they can be one and zero at a time), something that looks like magic, but has been contemplated in quantum physics for a long time. Applying this 'logic' to the world of Computers, solve problems at full speed and with multiple results for each variable. On paper, what this means is that computers will be infinitely more powerful and will make complex calculations at once, rather than one after another. This is something that for the basic user is not a big deal, but for a company that has to process millions of data, doing it in seconds rather than hours is a big breakthrough. To be able to test if an experimental vaccine is effective immediately instead of in days would be very useful. At the moment, the quantum computer of IBM with more power has 'only' 5 qubits of capacity, but the objective that have been marked is to be able to construct one With 50 qubits, something that would surpass to the more powerful supercomputers of the moment. However, to achieve all that power they also need to improve the protection of the qubits. Since they are very delicate and need to operate at temperatures close to absolute zero, any changes in temperature could destabilize them and cause calculation errors. Farewell to Moore Quantum computers would allow to leave behind Moore's Law that has ruled over modern computing. Since it is no longer possible to double every two years the number of transistors that a microprocessor integrates, the step that quantum computers and qubits pose would allow to abandon the linear growth of computing to make it exponential. Its ability to solve calculations and process information could help in a much faster and more complete development of artificial intelligence, which today are already part of many mobile phones, although with very limited and specific functions. Quantum computing would allow you to build digital brains that do not think linearly much more easily. Therefore, both Google and Microsoft are seeking to master this technology. D-Wave is another company working on the development of quantum computers, but at the moment, it seems that IBM is leading the way in this new phase of computing.
