#SteemitStorySlam May Winners Announced!

in #steemitstoryslam8 years ago (edited)

It's time to announce the May winners of @aunt-deb's Steemit Story Slam Competiton. This was an easy determination for a winner as I informed @aunt-deb of the rules when she asked me to be the judge:

Without Further Ado May's Steemit Story Slam Competiton Winner...

OK OK. Geez I was just joking, you can put your weapons down now!

There were a total of 11 entries for the May Competition. When I first looked at the final post from @aunt-deb for the final entry list I thought...

Before I watched the videos I decided to make a list of how the winner would be decided in able to have objectivity when determining the winner.

Criteria:

  • Is the video within the specified time limit?
  • Did the submitter give a reason for submitting the video or just describe the video?
  • Does the video apply to a mass audience?
  • How creative/memorable was the video?

Because I have been forced by mutiny to determine a winner, other than myself, let's go through the elimination process.

Is the video within the specified time limit?

Under this criterion My stroke of insight,The power of vulnerability ,The Forest Man, and Thoughts On humanity, fame and love were eliminated.

I did watch each video as the submitters found time to find the videos for the contest and in return, I could find time to watch them for their efforts. Out of these four, there were two I thoroughly enjoyed. My stroke of insight, submitted by @moonpunk, about a brain scientist who suffered a stroke herself was not only educational, but Jill Bolte Taylor was a downright humorous storyteller. Her knack for explaining a stroke through storytelling reminded me of how we try to homeschool our children, through narration or storytelling. She also brought a real human brain to her Ted Talk.

The Forest Man submitted by @goldenroom could have been the winner if not for being over the time limit. It's a story about Jadav Payeng who has been planting trees on Majuli Island in Northeast India since the 1970's to save it from erosion. He single handedly planted a forest LARGER than Central Park in New York City. His passion to save the island and the labor of love for his fellow citizens is downright inspiring.

Ok only 7 more videos to decide from!

Did the submitter give a reason for submitting the video or just describe the video?

Every video left met this qualification. Why? May I ask "Just Why?".

Does the video apply to a mass audience?

This was the hardest criterion to eliminate videos. You are my least favorite person at this exact moment in time @aunt-deb:-) Ok. So...

We Have 7 Winners!

That's too easy, so I'm going to have to suck it up and drive on. The videos eliminated were The gunfighter, ASL Nook - Where the Wild Things Are, How the Grinch Stole Christmas ASL Version and People Buy Feelings, Not Things.

The gunfighter video was absolutely hilarious. The narration style of the video was creative. However, it's in the western genre and this genre is not appealing to the masses.

The next two videos The Grinch Stole Christmas and Where the Wild Things Are were eliminated because it targeted a specific niche, the American Sign Language Audience. I know I seem like a cold hearted (insert name here). I have to tell you I actually watched them. I would have never watched them if not for this contest. The little girl in The Grinch Stole Christmas absolutely stole my heart. I could watch her sign all day, because she does it with great enthusiasm! I gained an appreciaton for the skill it takes to be able to tell a story through sign. I urge anyone reading this to watch her, because it's downright amazing.

The last video to be eliminated from this criterion is People Buy Feelings, Not Things. I have a B.S. in Business Administration and surely know the subject of Business does not appeal to a mass audience. The reason for @scaredycatsguide for submissal was to "slap(s) most of society with a wake up call on (why) they buy stuff". While I agree with the premise, most of society would not have watched a Tony Robbins Business Mastery Video.

Ok,so now that there are probably a few Steemians that want my head lets move to the last three videos still in contention.

How creative/memorable was the video?

Ok. We're down to three videos. If you search the most popular YouTube Genres List; Baby and Animal videos are near the top so it's not surprising these videos made it this far. I will go through the videos and start with third place and work my way to first.

  • Third Place: Top 10 Funny Baby Videos submitted by @jsnsamuel
Being creative with baby videos is actually quite easy. Babies give you all the content you need to make a creative video. Memorable? Uh, not so much. I wouldn't save it in my Favorite's Folder to watch again. It's a One and Done type video.

Second Place: Adulting Dogs also submitted by @jsnsamuel

This video was actually quite creative. Showing adult jobs that dogs are capable of doing is pretty interesting. I might show a close friend one of the tasks these dogs did, but would I remember it a year later? Probably Not.

AND FIRST PLACE IS

Animal and Food. Do I need to say more? This was a seriously thought provoking video. The unconditional love shown by this dog towards its owner really stole my heart. The man in the video was having one of those days where the world had him tired and down. He didn't take his slippers from the dog, almost cut off his fingers, and just about burnt his house down. The dog could have been spiteful and let the owner fulfill these events for the way it was treated when the owner came through the door.

But the dog loves its owner unconditionally.

The dog's love and kindness wore off on the owner and it even managed to get a piece of the omelet in the end instead of a bland dog treat. I walked away after watching the video thinking of how the world could be changed if we loved unconditionally like this dog did its owner. Imagine. Just like the dog changed its owner's crummy day we could also do the same to the world if we walked around with the unconditional emotion of love in our hearts towards humanity.

On a personal note. I will be splitting half of the Steem and SBD generated by this post to @ilovedietcoke for How the Grinch Stole Christmas ASL Version. This video seriously touched me. The little girl is amazing in her skill and her enthusiasm for storytelling is awe inspiring. I have gained a true appreciation for this art form of a language we call American Sign Language.

Congratulations to the Winners. Thank you for the submissions. Thank you(I think) @aunt-deb for asking me to be May's Judge. It was truly an honor.

Don't forget to add @aunt-deb to your follow list if you love animals, want to see the progress of a seriously cool backyard project, or FOOD(Come on who doesn't love food?).

If you enjoyed this post, please upvote and follow! I write a little about everything. Some posts are very personal with the intent of helping others. However, if it interests me I may just Steem about it! Steem on Steemians

Sort:

Someone get the guillotine for @lexikon082, off with his head! LOL I kid, Thanks for putting in the time to judge, this was fun! :-)

You are very welcome @scaredycatguide.

Great collection of videos and many thx to auntdeb and lex for putting it together

Congratulations to all the winners and runners-up and many thanks for your entries. I learned a lot and laughed much - it doesn't get any better than that!

Well done!!!

Thank you so much for your generosity. I am so glad that you enjoyed the video and have experienced and enjoyed ASL because of it. I am hoping to do ASL videos regularly although I'm not as skilled or cute as the little girl on ASL Nook

You are very welcome @ilovedietcoke. I truly believe generosity is one quality that distinguished Steemit from other platforms and I truly want to do my part to keep that spirit alive. My wife, the kids, and I actually watched the video together and I have a feeling ASL is going to make it into our homeschool curriculum. My wife and I will be discussing it more. I look forward to seeing some of your ASL videos because if we decide to do this we will need all the help we can get!

OMGosh, I homeschool as well! I learned sign language as a kid because my uncle is deaf and my kids go to a sign language class taught by an ASL teacher that lives down the street. I really hope you learn and teach your kids, it is invaluable.

I'd like to thank the academy :p No, seriously, thank you both for organizing this fun challenge! :D I have to say I was entertained by all of the entries so I knew it would be a tough call but I'm so happy "Omlette" was chosen. @lexikon082, your breakdown of the entries was awesome and entertaining in itself :) I look forward to future challenges! And thanks again :)

I am glad you enjoyed the post @goldenroom! Don't spend all that hard earned Steem in one place!-) You truly deserved it and the video is one I will remember for a long time, if not forever.

Standing ovation for a tour-de-force example of fair, logical judgment, @lexikon082! That was truly a difficult array to sort, let alone rank.

Excellent job on all points!

Thanks @aunt-deb. This is one of the most truly difficult posts I have ever written on Steemit. It was truly very rewarding though. Thanks once again for giving me the honor of being a judge.

You're welcome!

I'm glad you enjoyed it, though, and took me off the hook for the decision. (It's okay to not like me for that part. I expect it. ;~D) I knew you'd do them justice. You did an outstanding job and I couldn't have asked for better!

@lexikon082 I love this post (not just because I claimed a winning spot). The way you logically explained the points and narrowed down the winners, impeccable style of judging. and of course @aunt-deb is awesome, thanks for organizing the contest.

Holy crap man

You did a 12/10 on this post being the judge, that puts a lot of stuff on here to shame, this was BRILLIANT.

Good job by you and everyone and of course our friend

@aunt-deb

who really is like our sister !!!

Thanks @barrydutton. It's grat to see people appreciated the effort. Yes@aunt-deb is awesome possum.
