Hi everyone. I'm posting this from Steemleo! I was fortunate enough to get an airdrop of 1422 LEO due to my stake in PAL. It's not everyday you wake up to some free tokens :) I have staked my airdrop and I plan to contribute with content that is relevant to the platform.
What is dust?
Dust is the smallest amount we can send and this is 0.001 STEEM. We usually receive these from bots as messages in our wallet as spam or confirming a related transaction on the blockchain.
What do we do with dust?
I'm a person with OCD tendencies, so I'll either round up my liquid STEEM by powering up or sending it as a bid to a bidbot (I'm only a minnow...)
My little bot
I decided to write a little bot using the steem-bot library. It monitors my wallet for dust and then sends it as a gift to my daughter's account (@principal8). She can then power up her account (albeit very slowly!).

Where to next?
Now I was thinking...what if we collectively pooled all our dust somehow and then used it to help other minnows by means of upvotes or SBI shares (@steembasicincome)? Does that sound like a feasible idea? I would be interested to hear what you think. I am placing a @steem-bounty on this post to encourage thoughtful comments and ideas.

I think it's a cool idea it would be great if it was integrated into front ends like steempeak with a checkbox on your wallet for automatically donate dust and then set an account.
If you can get the communities like steembasicincome and msp to support it, it could be a an awesome venture. Makes me think I wonder how much dust is sent around these days

Apologies if this sounds critical but what does LEO have to do with dust collecting? Anyways rather than putting the collected dust into SBI maybe gain it and buy an upvote to fellow subscribers? Have some type of group sign up and track all donations from its members. When the dust collection hits a threshold like 0.05sbd or 0.10sbd randomly pick a winner to use the collection and buy an upvote for them. Risen and repeat?

I think these "dust" transfers already help minnows. It's not a lot but still better than nothing. I think a better way to support minnows is a program where you first receive Sp as delegation that your vote is worth something (0.01) and when you grow and become bigger you have to delegate to other minnows to allow the platform to grow and introduce everyone. And for safety for the program, you can say you have to pay * amount of Steem but receive it back when you delegated the amount you received to another. I hope someone will create a service like this I will definitely use it. unfortunately, I can't code and do it by myself:(
I guess it would be like if we all collected and pooled 5 cent coins (or nickels). It could end up being a not insignificant amount. The SBI shares is a good idea. Ongoing support for a minnow.
you are totally wrong about dust on steemit
your definition above for dust is totally wrong
dust is a new term operated by steemit cooperation to remove the posts's rewards less than 0.024 steem into the pool and be burned there to keep the price of the steem higher than the inflation might happen.
so my friend, if for any reason , your post, or comment has a reward less than 0.024 steem, then it will be after 7 days for the posting date ZERO REWARD.
HOW TO ESTIMATE YOUR DUST FROM NON DUST ? well, there is 2 options , simple one to do it by yourself and calculate each post or, using the steem world calcy=ulator for posts under dust.
how to avoid dust ?
increase the votes values in the rewards to value higher than 0.025 steem by bots, friends, buy more sp, etc

Since 'dust' is a descriptive term, not a technical term, I think that he's well within reason to call the tiny wallet transactions 'dust' and talk about ways to make them productive.
But if you insist on being pedantic...
Steemit Corporation only runs steemit, inc, not Steem (although they still take lead on Steem development). Dust as your are defining is a blockchain term, not a Condenser term.
The cutoff is actually 0.02 STU, not 0.024 STEEM.
dust is a term acknowledged by steemit cooperation , and as they made the program and software, they implemented this in the blockchain as a cutoff of the rewards, who else can do it, of course not you and not me and not any other user of steemit platform.
however, you should keep bearing in mind that the value of dust is a measure by experiment from the users like you and me as there is not a fixed value assigned by steemit officially, so, from the steem world calculations it is nearly any value less than 0.024 steem and regardless it is 0.02 stu or 0.015 sbd or bla bla bla bla .. it is a value deducted to reach zero reward if your post has a reward less than 0.024 steem .
it does not matter if the unit stu or steem or euro or sbd or any other unit, by this action, many small writters lost a passive daily income and only the rich people is getting the best of the steemit.
because of that, some great people tried to overcome this shit dust by adding a value to the dust reward to reach a limit 0.025 steem and they have added some bots here and there but again the whales of steemit fucked them as you can not see these bots any more unless you know the link since day one - for me i stopped using these dust bots since very long time as i do not care anymore about the dust.
