Hi Friends!
I was super excited to have the opportunity to sit down with Steem Monsters Co-Founder @yabapmatt to discuss everything tournaments related. In fact - He gave me a sneak peak of what the tournament screen could look like! It's so fresh off the press that not even @aggroed had seen it yet.
What We Chatted About...
- Before jumping into some of the more technical aspects of tournaments - let's get high level for a second. For those who are new to Steem Monsters - can you give us a quick run down on what the tournaments are and how they are different from what is going on right now?
How often will there be tournaments? Is it all day every day, or just on the weekends, or what? And will players be slated to play against their level of players, just as they are in the testing phase?
Will only Steem Monsters host tournaments - or will other dApps, groups or communities have the opportunity to form their own tournaments?
Will some tournaments have an entry fee?
What kind of tiers will there be for tournaments? Will there be opportunities for people to earn at various levels?
Will the gameplay be similar in tournaments as they are in battles (mana cap, rules of combat, assembling your team after seeing your opponent etc.) - or will you guys be throwing us different curveballs?
Will prize money come in the form of STEEM, SBD, fiat, cards/packs?
Can you give us a sneak peak of what the design concepts for the tournaments will look like?
Will tournaments be set and forget, or will you need to be live on the game to play?
Will the leaderboard be wiped clean at the beginning of every season?
As I understand it, the prize money will come from 1/3 of the revenue from weekly booster pack sales. What if there is a really slow week or month in sales? How do you plan to keep the prizepool fairly consistent so the public does not loose interest? Will you have a reservoir of prizepool savings to compensate for it?
Will tournaments always be individuals playing each other, or will there be guild wars?
Ok... now for the question everyone has really been waiting for? Will @rustle ever be made into a Steem Monster??
How have beta booster pack sales been going? Are you selling as expected, faster, slower?
Once tournaments are live - how will that help springboard your marketing efforts?
Sneak Peak at the Tournament Page
Matt was cool enough to share the very first preview of what the tournament page could look like! Of course things may change - but you can see that it is clearly and intuitively designed. People will be able to open the tab - see the countdown timer to when the next tournaments are happening, quickly view how many players are allowed, the entry fee, host of the tournament etc.
Rustle As A Steem Monster?
Just to job your memory...
Ok... now for the question everyone has really been waiting for? Will @rustle ever be made into a Steem Monster??
@rustle made a guest appearance in our interview and although Yaba can't promise anything... he definitely did not rule out the possibility of Rustle eventually becoming a monster. He even mentioned that maybe there could be a design contest or something.
I think @trisquelwhare who designed the above card to share on the @steemmonstershow would have a good headstart on that!

The Interview
Here you guys go. Enjoy.
Monster Kisses!
I hope that both newbies and more experienced monster fans alike found this interview helpful. Love you guys and I look forward to chatting with you in the comments below!
Thanks so much for doing this interview. Fantastic insight, great questions, and a really unfiltered look into the future of the game.
As an Australian, @rustle must be in the game, or @mattclarke will riot.
Regarding commentary, streaming of tournaments and all that sundry, @o07 and myself are very interested in doing a stream / regular show to talk strategy, common stuff, and a whole bunch more.
I have a background (From many years ago) - in video game journalism (And even worked on the other side of the fence, once upon a time being a community manager for a major game publisher) - so I'm keen to lend my expertise in this field whenever, and however, I can!
Thanks again for this excellent post!
Oooh I can’t wait to see what you and @o07 do for a show to cover tournaments. You guys have such a fun dynamic on camera together - and that paired with your technical knowledge of the game will make for an awesome show.
I’m glad you enjoyed the interview @holoz0r!
I said to him as soon as that beard cuts me from the shot I'm out!
Hahahah valid 😂
I can see him as a supervillain type, perhaps.
A tiny megalomaniac.
Fantastic interview! Combining the anticipation of tournaments and the new gameplay style which is much more dynamic, I'm really excited about @steemmonsters' future. I think what I've enjoyed the most the community so far, even more than the game. (if that's possible :-D)
Especially what you mentioned: that the team is quite open to feedback, and there's a feeling that you can really influence what it will become. Matt is an awesome guy and excellent developer, and this is really a new kind of collectible card game that will hopefully set the bar for how provable scarcity/ownership of digital cards can transform the genre.
So yeah, thanks again for this video! Peace.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this interview @d-pend! Matt really is an awesome guy and it’s been awesome to see how they’ve worked people’s feedback into the game.
I’m right there with you when it comes to community. Some of my very favorite steemians ive met through Steem Monsters. It’s been really cool to get to know so many awesome people.
Nice interview, loved it! :-)
I freakin' LOVE your SM gifs!
Right??? @clove71 is so talented! <3
@Coruscate AND @LittleScribe Sorry 4 the delayed response, @cLove71 DM'ed and mentioned that You are given me a FREE pack...
Just wanted to Thank You BOTH... AND You make an Incredible Duo with...
THE SteemMONSTER Show...
Well Done Ladies !!
PS- Great Interview with Yaba... Thanks Again 4 all the things You do !!
That was a great interview, and it covered a lot of my questions ... except the most important one, that everybody seems to be asking these days: what about earning XP as a reward for the cards that are involved in the Tournaments? There was also some talk earlier about this whole idea of "burning cards" to enter the Tournaments, which I'd really like to clarify. For instance, the Alpha-only Tournaments, will they also require Alpha-only cards to be "burned" to enter them? I know that a lot is still yet to be decided in this space, but I don't want these fundamental questions to be forgotten, and sprung on us at the last minute. How many here might have to miss out on entering an Alpha-only tournament because you have already leveled-up all of your Alpha Edition cards, and thus don't really want to "burn" any of them? I'm still holding onto some Level 1 Alpha cards in my collection for this purpose, just in case!
Great to see my @rustle SteemMonster mockup card there! Thanks again for this great interview Lea!

Its a sweet card, bro. Thanks heaps.
That was an AWESOME interview. The sneak preview looks amazing and the fact that we can do charity or funding tournaments is totally mind bloggling. Thanks for the work. I am getting even more excited about Steem Monsters now. I didn't thought that is even possible.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the interview @flauwy! The ability to do charity tournaments was one of my favorite things I got from this chat too. I think that is so freaking awesome. Opens the doors for so many cool possibilities.
I just wrote about exactly that. Imagine Steem dApps who finance themselves with that!
Oh awesome! Thanks for letting me know. My Steemify app has been a little buggy lately and so I think i've missed getting tagged in things. I just checked out the post and love your writeup on the topic! So many possibilities!
@rustle feels like the early makings of Pokemon's Charizard. Be careful what you wish for!
Great interview with a lot of insight into the tournaments. I'm excited to see what kinds of tournaments not only from steemmonsters comes, but also what kind of tournaments other users or projects might launch! Also that he memtioned Sponsoring and charity sounds like a great idea, really can't wait until tournaments starts!

Exactly! I am so excited to see what other tournaments people decide to host. I'm especially excited about the prospect of using tournaments to raise money for charities. Super cool!
Wow! love the design and page so far for the tournaments , hope they start soon @coruscate ! Great video with @yabapmatt full of updates and things to look forward to like new cards coming out once Beta ends ( im sure the Bird RUSTLE Will become a Steem Monster! lol! Even though he's soooo cute! 😂) Wnd tournaments not being as long as I thought eigther! I like that there will be free tournaments as well to try and win . Very exciting times to look forward too! See you on the Battle Field!💁💕👍👹💀👾
I gotta say, I was stoked to wake up and see this! @coruscate thank you so much for asking all those key questions, now when people start hammering me with tournament questions, I'll just send them over here to your post. :)
@yabapmatt you look tired as hell! Get some sleep! :D
hahah yeah I'm pretty sure Matt works around the clock - so a little sleep might be in order. ;)
I'm really glad you found this interview so helpful @crystalhuman! Yeah - send all those people here for a little 25 min chat with Matt to answer their questions. :)
Great chat. I notice how dark his hair is, and look forward to seeing some grey shot through over the next year or so.
One thought on tournaments, and again, I'm sure this has been considered, but I'd like to see many of them splinter locked; so if you bring in a red team you can or must play through as red.
A: It's scope to know something about the team your opponent will field.
B: It prevents the heartbreak of progressing through a tournament only to find that your strongest splinter is unavailable for the last round. That would really suck.
Love your work as always, Lea.
So much hype! Lovely interview 🔥🔥🔥

Thanks Kevin! 😘
Glad you enjoyed the interview!
Do you play steemmonster yourself? I've never matched up with you!
Posted using Partiko Android
You probably have a better deck than I do. 😂
I’ve been playing a bit more with the @steemmonstershow page because we have some better cards on that account.
I do want to start battling more though. If only I could battle at work - I feel like it would make me more productive. Too bad my boss doesn’t get it. 😅
Ah cool, I just followed the account, I think I get mixed up with the steemsistershow haha.
I play it on my phone at work, it's super productive haha. Just tap a few buttons. All automated :)
That’s true. I should just be a little sneakier and play on my phone. 😜
Yeah. I guess I have some obvious preferences when it comes to naming conventions. 🤷♀️
haha it's all about being an ninja warrior at work. Keep pumping out the good content, Lea. Cya!
So looking forward to those tournaments! :)
I know right? I gotta start battling more to get ready. haha
Very exciting! I look forward to listening to this. I love the tournament page and I’m so stoked for tourneys to start, even more so now!!
Yeah I was super impressed by the tournament page too! Especially the countdown timer for matches. There are so many people playing in different time zones that a countdown is much easier than listing times in UTC.
This is a part of a post I did only what I think of the tournaments and the experience I have as a player of other collectible card games, SM is still very young and there is sure to be a long way to go and learn, but it is always good see how they behave and what games already have great success, excellent interview @coruscate your very cute as always :)
"I am not an expert in marketing or strategies for a collectible card game to be successful, but I am going to comment on what I have seen that has worked in other games and how I think the steemmonster tournaments should be.
The tournaments (beginners) for the first invoker levels (LVL 1 to LVL3): I consider that there should be no prizes in STEEM or SBD, only steemmonster packages.
The (amateur) tournaments for invoker levels (LVL 4 to LVL 6): I consider that the prizes should be half reinforcement packs and half in crypts.
Tournaments (experienced) for invoker levels (LVL 6 to LVL 8): I consider that the prizes should be half reinforcement packs and half in crypts, (only that the amount of reinforcement packs and the prize in crypts should be be considerably older than the amateur tournament).
These first three tournaments must have modest prizes
Quarterly tournaments, would be open tournaments (but would require to pay a certain amount of SBD or STEEM to enter) regardless of the level of invoker, these tournaments if they would offer prizes in STEEM and SBD and could also create a special card for participants and winners, but with a 1:10 ratio of the annual tournament in the total amount of the prize, suppose that the annual tournament has a pot of 15,000 SBD, the quarterly tournaments would have a prize of 1,500 SBD. In these tournaments you could play with special requirements such as that the team includes at least one gold monster or do not accept legendary, a tournament could be just common, in short everything that can occur to the creators of the game, Clearly they should announce the format well in advance.
Annual tournament, you should program the existence of some requirements to participate, but not levels in the summoners if not in the quality of the player, a requirement could be to have a minimum number of battles played or also have reached a minimum number in the classification throughout the year, this tournament should have a pretty big prize, it would be fantastic to see an ad that says (1 annual steemmonster tournament $ 25,000 in prizes), apart from having enough publicity on social networks so more people join to the game.
I do not think there should be tournaments of only gold cards or of only alpha version, that would encourage a very small group to buy letters only for economic benefit and steemmonster would be spending resources on a very small group of people while the vast majority would feel Excluded."
Terrific interview and it was nice to see how the Tournaments will Work..................@coruscate
I’m so glad you found it helpful @stokjockey!!
Ha ha! Rustle needs to be on a card. Let's make it happen! I wonder if serge takes requests.
well it might be time to get interested, or at least i will try to investigate the game, i'm kinda late hopper to all sorts of games, becasue of my long journey of mmorpg betas/early versions ;)
Warning: You might get hooked once you start playing! 😉
If you are free - come join us on the Steem Monster Show this week! We’ll give you a free booster pack to help get you going and you can learn more about Steem Monsters.
count me in ;) is there a way to get notified when you go live so i dont miss it? a email notification or something on vimm?
No email notifications I'm afraid. Most crypto people don't like giving out their email address. If you follow the @steemmonstershow page - we usually put out an announcement a few day in advance and then you'll see the post when it goes live. We include a countdown timer in the announcement post too. Hope that helps!
thanks !
Thanks for this @coruscate and @yabapmatt . Now I'm even more excited about the game and what that will mean for the Steem blockchain as a whole.
That's awesome!! I'm really glad you enjoyed my chat with Matt about tournaments.
Great interview and spoilers. @steemmonsters is not only an amazing project with caring devs, but a community that is going to change the way TCG and CCG are played and collected.
Loved the format @coruscate
Thanks for the feedback @bafi! I'm so glad you enjoyed this interview with Matt.
Loved the interview! Defintely gonna hang out on the discord show from now on!
Awesome, we look forward to seeing you there!
Thank you so much for hosting this interview.
Do you mind if I mention this interview and translate in Korean on my posting for kr-users?
Sure! I only have the questions written in the post -but people would still need to listen to the video interview to get Matt's responses. If you still think that would be valuable for kr-users - then go for it!
Thank you.
Yes, they still need to watch the video. So I linked it and translated the scripts of your questions and Matt's answers in Korean.

Really nice interview, some excellent questions and a good flow. Thanks for the preview, looks slick. I am wondering how many cards will be printed the next (gamma) version..

Great question @toocurious!! I'll be sure to log that one for next time I chat with Matt. :)
Thanks, let me know when that happens, I might have a few other ones ;)
