The new Rewards are Fucking Lame!

SteemMonsters New Reward-Cards Rant by @mongshter Title Image

The New Rewards Suck!

Or is that just me?!

Let me clarify: I don't want to complain about the new cards, they're actually quite interesting and add a little much needed complexity to the deck building options, especially with those new abilities.

The changed reward structure for Daily Quests and Season Leagues however, just doesn't make sense to me!

Maybe it's the way I treat this game, but I'd imagine a lot of players would feel the same negative impact as myself.

Lost Incentive to Keep Playing

Getting Booster Packs from the Daily Quests was awesome!

It meant I'd always have a chance to make small improvements to my play-decks just by eventually being able to level up the one or the other random card, let alone the excitement about possibly finding Epics, Golds or even Legendaries.

Now I have a ton of Beta Cards that are sitting at a rather low level, and there's literally no way to ever get those up without spending money.

It's sure nice to get other cards, I mean it's better than nothing, but it doesn't feel very exciting when it's just a selection of 10 possible cards with four commons that will drop over and over and you probably don't even have much use for most of them anyways.

The Snake is Biting it's Own Tail

So the whole reasoning behind this change had to do with too many people "farming" boosters from multiple accounts and the perceived loss for invested asset holders?!

Well, it does make sense in a way but I think the fact that Booster Pack sales in general haven't been looking as great as they once did probably has more to do with it.

If you already have a properly levelled Deck of Beta/Alpha Cards, that means you're playing in a high league and due to the new tiered Daily Quest Rewards scheme, you're being showered with up to 20 of those Reward Cards every day.

Great, good, you'll get ahead of the game even quicker and you'll have those levelled up, too, in no time. But you definitely don't have a reason to buy more Boosters or cards on the market, right?!

Wouldn't it have made a lot more sense to release a new Edition of Boosters with those new cards, and maybe reduce the drop rate for Beta-Boosters in the game?!

That way the new cards would be attractive on both the open market and especially in the shape of a new edition booster-pack available exclusively for purchase!

How do You feel about it?

I'd really like to know how you see this.

This might after all just be my subjective impression. I have my Deck round about at Level 4, just good enough to take a peak into the Gold League and then get slaughtered. To compete further I'd really need to be in the Level 5-6 range. Taking my whole Deck up a notch will cost a fortune and I'm not really willing to go that far.

I would always buy a few cards on the market here and there if that helps with a specific combo as I make slow progress, but I won't spend a ton of money to take my cards up a level all across the board.

"Earning" just the new cards does very little to help me make progress, selling them will be pretty pointless, too. I can bet they'll end up cheap as fuck in a few days anyways since they drop in huge numbers for the high-league players

So will I just be sitting here with the deck I have and keep playing?!

Not for long if things stay like this.

I hope they'll come up with something better for the next sudden changes.

see you on the battlefield... maybe...

Sort:

I feel these cards are underpowered too. Look at the mana they need and thr attack and health.

yeah, to be fair, with the new abilities and at higher levels quite some of these new cards offer interesting possibilities and actually patch some weaknesses the individual splinters have - e.g.: the speed-up buff for Fire.

I might even argue that the Vampire and Hobgoblin as well as the new Legendary Neutral Tank is actually possibly slightly overpowered at a higher level.

But it's definitely nothing to build a deck on or to anxious look forward to when flipping those cards.

I agree!

I think that if they wanted to introduce these new cards, rewarding them at the end of the League or alternating between them and Booster packs could have been an option. However, I miss receiving Booster Packs.

This way I HAVE TO PURCHASE Beta cards or win them in contests. I can't get them through packs anymore unless I buy Beta packs. The whole point of of Daily Quest rewards is that you'll get a Booster pack with the chance to get some rare cards and some epic or perhaps a Dragon card. While some of these new cards seem cool, once we have enough to have them at a certain level, then what? We sell them until they flood the market and their value goes significantly down? We still have to spend more than we gain.

I don't like it AT ALL!

I'm glad I'm not the only one and thank you for posting about it. We need to go back to Booster packs in Future leagues. Include these new cards in booster packs, or have Daily Quests rewards Booster Packs, and include these cards in another way.

I MISS MY BOOSTER PAAAAACKS ;)

Yeah, I was really wondering that everyone just seemed to be like "Yay, new cards!"...

Thank you, I'm also glad I'm not alone with the impression I'm getting about these changes.

Sure. I mean it's fun to get new cards, and some of them are cool, but we need to be able to also get the other cards too. I'm not a programmer but maybe they can include the new cards in Beta packs. So we could have traditional Beta packs, and new Beta packs. If it's too complicated for us to choose which pack we prefer to receive, then at least the new ones have the new cards and all the other cards as well.

Changes might be good if new cards will have some value and if you can sell them on the market (and buy what you want).

I've just posted today two articles, I wonder what do you think about proposed changes...
Request - please cut Reward Edition Cards supply.

Getting slaughtered by high level monsters feels bad and there are no achievable goals for players with low level cards, thus: League Format Improvement Proposal article.

unfortunately the new cards are already dropping in price after just a few days of being available... they'll be the cheapest cards on the market in no time because they are given out en masse to high ranking players.

Yeah, so selling them will give nothing to us who still have low cards, who got into the game later, and who need cards that are a lot more expensive.

I'll check those posts out. Thanks for sharing them with me.

You know how to make a little @mongshter happy :D

I completely agree, @mongshter. Once again, the people who can afford it benefit from this system. It seems to be the new trend around here :0(

I still have two starter packs I kept aside to give away, but with the new rules, I won't. Because what do I say to the winners? "Congrats, here is a starter deck, but you will never going to be able to make it a complete deck, let alone level up without spending a truckload of money"?

So many people have been playing so intense, just to win those booster packs and build their deck. The ones with the maxed decks, they didn't care about the booster packs - they could skip the DQ and go for the leaderboard.

With the free booster packs gone, the frustration level among the small guys has grown, while the top accounts can now play for a place on the leaderboard and get shiny new cards. I bet they are really satisfied with this change.
(It was probably their own idea, like all changes before this one, this was probably pressed buy the guys in the mav' house)

SM had a very promising future, and they were building a bridge between the Steem blockchain and the outside world. But if you ask me, they now took a turn that's gonna kill the game.
It's just not interesting anymore for a new player to step in, because if he doesn't have 2k, he will never get anywhere.

I forsee that their user base will shrink, because there is no use for spending 45 minutes to win 5 games with a level 1 deck, only to be rewarded with one card that doesn't help building the deck. And if you're out of luck, you might get the same card 5 days in a row...

I've kept a level 1 alpha deck - as a collector's item - but I don't even bother to play it anymore. I merged to level 2 accounts into a level three, so I could at least get 5 cards as a reward, instead of two...

Fortunately, I live in Western Europe, so at least I can still play. I think they've fogotten how many people here live in countries where circumstances are very different. First they were restricted by STINC with the RC issue, now they are as good as banned from the game...

No, I can't say I think it has been a good move...!

yeah, exactly... I was so focused on my personal experience that I didn't even consider the elephant in the room... what's the point in starting to play steemmonsters when cards worth fifty bucks won't be enough to do anything other than tinker around in bronze league.

I understand they want to keep selling boosters and also keep the invested players happy, but clearly the game is being directed from a point-of-view that's above Diamond.

If they don't come up with a different way to make maybe slower but at least real progress for a regular player, I also think they've just killed their biggest growth driver.

And really, if they had released the new cards in exclusive boosters... I bet the mavericks would have bought these en masse, too...

Oh well, we'll see how this goes down.

As long as we're not a maverick, it's all out of our hands anyway. We have to take it like they give it to us, whether we like it or not...

As long as new Reward Cards you can sell on the market and buy required alpha or beta cards it will work fine. But I also have doubts and earlier today posted Request - please cut Reward Edition Cards supply.

Getting slaughtered by high level monsters feels bad thus just published League Format Improvement Proposal article.

Selling the reward cards was profitable for the first couple of hours, but the rice dropped so fast again... and it's not like those cards are so amazingly powerful that people are standing in line for them...

thanks for posting your link under my post's comment section THREE TIMES...

dude, I know it's hard to be seen, but you're being a bit too aggressive with your promotional comments.

Oh, right, I apologize for spamming. Have an upvote and also I can send you a (common) monster card to make up for this blunder...

nooo... all good... just keep it in mind in the future... nothing wrong with promoting your post a little, but once for every comment here was just a bit much ;)

Anyway I've sent you a Goblin Sorcerer (C1-24-7RB5LGF3Y8), as I see you play Earth a lot. Never gifted a card before ;)

Oh... that's very kind of you! Thanks!

It seems they have sold over 1000 booster packs just over the past 2 days, giving over 500 packs per day. I think this is a great achievement for such a small Indy game studio, as long as it will at continue at this level.
I expect they will limit Reward Edition cards, but I think they are creating them too fast. Every season brings changes, we'll see how it works.

I have my Deck round about at Level 4, just good enough to take a peak into the Gold League and then get slaughtered.

Just feeling the same. This is why I've just posted League Format Improvement article.

well... they used to sell several thousand boosters every day just a month ago... so you can bet they are not very happy with the more recent figures!

Excellent!

So... what does that mean?! You like the new rewards? Or you like my alternative ideas? Or do you just find it excellent that I don't like the new rewards?

I don't know... could you elaborate?
