Bronze or Silver as the pay threshold isn't too high to compete at those levels. You could always alternate. .... Novice/Bronze/Silver no need to limit yourself to just the one league.

ok cool, so you wouldn't skip a bronze level tourney because you paid a small entry fee and are limited to very basic cards?

No, I don't view the game that way.
The level a game takes place at doesn't factor in my decision to play it or not.
For example A novice game that is free to enter with a prize pool of $100 is the same as a Gold game that is free to enter with a prize pool of $100. The only difference is the gold level tournament will hold more value due to less players being in it. The same goes for buy ins with the same prize pools.
If I was trying to gain interest in a project I would mainly have my games in the novice/bronze leagues as it would include the max amount of players as possible being able to play my game which means the max amount of eyes on my project.
