Steem-Monsters
Current League Payout
Current SM League Prize Scheme
The current system awards the top 10 players. While on the surface this looks to be a good system we have to take into consideration that their is currently 2000 + individual players in this league. That is a very small percentage of players being league "winners".
250 Booster packs + sponsor prizes is an insanely large reward for first place in these leagues. Why not payout top 25 instead ? More prizes isn't needed to payout a higher percentage of players. A redistribution of the current prize structure is what is needed, not more added prizes.
Shouldn't the first place winner be happy with 100 - 200 free booster packs + what-ever other sponsored prizes the Steam-Monster team are able to attain ? More winners means more happy players and happy players can only be a positive for the whole games ecosystem (Happy Players Spend On The Product).
But We Spent Thousands
I know many at the top spent thousands on their cards and want to recoup some of that expense but expecting to put a dent in your investment in a single season is just as unreasonable as the small investors expecting to win a bunch of rewards with a $10 investment.
Another benefit would be more players will be continuously playing. For example I invested about $2500 in Steem-Monstersbut I don't bother playing much outside of collecting the daily and then making a run up the league on the last day or two to get maximum rewards vs. Time Spent Playing.
If the league rewards were more spread out, I and others who use the same strategy would spend more time playing in order to reach the top 25 thus creating more games and competitiveness. We also would be more motivated to reach the top 10. Which would mean us investing more or combining cards to reach higher league standings. I believe Steem-Monsters is doing itself a disservice with the current payout structure of the league.
Tournament Payouts
Current Tournament Payouts
The majority of tournaments that are currently running don't just have a top heavy payout, they have a top only payout. This is ok in some tournaments but the bulk (especially higher paying freerolls) need to payout a higher percentage of players. Paying out rewards to the top 3/4 is ok if the rewards are small and/or the field of players is small but when we have a tournament with 100 Players in it then only paying out 3/4 % of players isn't the best model to take.
Benefits To Spreading The Rewards
More winners is better for the ecosystem as a whole. Our tournament funding comes from sales of booster packs and marketplace fees. More places paid in these games means more players with rewards that they will likely use to better their decks. This recycles some of the awarded funds back into the Steem-Monster ecosystem.
Winners are also more likely to invest more of their outside income (Fiat or other currencies) into the game. Winners are likely to spread the word of Steem-Monsters to their friends. More spots paid means more winners.
Its likely not going to be the guys who already have maxed decks that will make the most purchases going forward. They have maxed decks already ..... its the ones that don't that will be spending funds. Making more of the ones that don't have winners and keeping them excited to play seems like a step in the right direction to me.
Proof My Suggested Systems Work
PokerStars is the most popular online poker site in the world. They bring in an annual revenue of $1.4 Billion dollars. They also have a similar model to Steem-Monsters in terms of having leagues and tournaments. Surely such a company that has already experienced the growing pains SM is currently dealing with knows what they are doing.

Lovin it. I agree. More people being paid equals a big win for more players and for the game itself.
Thanks for giving your opinion.
I do hope they strongly consider spreading out the prize pool to at least the top 25 in leagues and percentage wise in tournaments. There is allot of benefit for everyone in doing so.
I’m playing daily trying to get above bronze II level and find myself buying cards. Level 2 cards are the highest I have. My fear for investing more is that I don’t really fully understand the game. I’m learning as I go.

I took the same approach. .. Learn as I go. I jokingly tell people I pick my team using the eenie meenie miney mo strategy.
I always suggest to newbies to use something with allot of health in the front and back and If possible add something that regenerates health. Use that as a base and once you get more info on the game, while you play, then you can adjust to your own playing needs.
I use water maps. I'm not bad at it. Level 3 Summoner and several high cards. But against the life of this element has virtually no chance. Although for example I have a golden medusa. I find it difficult to pump all the elements, because starter pack is almost half a day of my work. However, I put some money into the game.
Those life splinter bots are a real pain. I find sneak monsters in the back can sometimes beat them. I had some success with the rusty android as the tank vs them as well.
I win them with specials. conditions and when I'm lucky))
work in a group with others to transfer your excess cards from daily quests and they will send you cards to complete levels, do not combine cards till it's a level up, that way you can trade for them.
Important to have melee sneak monsters, and thorns vs. retailiate on small low mana if having to use in last position to fight against sneaks!, that way slow monsters have virtually 2 attacks....And melees
I received the Lord's prize, and then improved it to level 2. And the whole tactic is 3 dollars!
I agree with you @rentmoney, that the Season Rewards should be more spread out thru the SM community. You could also create rewards for different categories of gameplay like highest percentage of battle winnings, win the most games with certain splinters or monsters, but also bonuses for who bought the most booster packs etc... they have a great tool on hand to initiate certain player behavior. I hope they get creative with that.
I like your comparison with Poker Stars Tournament Prize structure and I hope that we probably could see something similar with SM. Some kind of dynamic Prize Pool allocation, which depends on the amount of players in the tournaments and the type of tournament played, would be awesome.
Another thing I would like to see is the use of more meta data and player statistics to provide more transparency and depth to the gameplay.
Furthermore, I would like to see the main reward pool account in dollars at the main page of Steemmonsters. How big is the actual official Tournament Reward Pool of Steemmonsters?
Since it gets funded by Booster Packs this information should be displayed on the main page and be used as a marketing instrument.
Thanks for taking the time to read and add to the discussion. I like all your suggestions as well. Having the total amount of rewards still available to be won and total amount that has been given out already would be great and useful info to help affiliates. Free boosters for the top pack purchaser per week would also likely drive up sales. I think 10 boosters would be a nice little bonus for such a purchaser.
That is a good question. I believe SM once announded that 30%(?) from beta packs were to go towards funding tournaments but we also have the Alpha pack sales/Market fees and kickstarter rewards to take into account as well.
Maybe you could push the discussion about the Tournament Reward Pool to the mavericks discord channel for further discussion.
I think we should use all our possibilities to be as transparent as possible for a Blockchain project.
I think it might be better to wait until tournaments are automatic and on the official site to bring up that suggestion.

I have stopped thinking about joinin any manual tourney😂 only the bigger investors would win because they have time and money to maxed the cards level and know more about its abilities.
To have a booster pack by buying it with the steem i earned from posting and commenting still a big dream for me. I can have the level 3 summies are a blessing from having a good network through several community so far. Thanks for sharing your thoughtful idea.. I think There will be an internal tourney soon, like the promise of having a mobile app on q3 2019.
Thank you for reading and commenting. There have been some novice and bronze level tournaments so there is a chance for everyone to win something no matter what level cards we have.
You're right, earning from posingt is also difficult.
I wish you best with your Steemit account and with your Steem-Monsters account.
But if you check on the novice cuddles participant lists .. you'll see some big and top players rather than real novice players 😂 thanks to you too😉

Nice, you got an awesome upgoat, thanks to @rentmoney
BuildTeam wishes everyone a bullish new Year!
Want a boost? Minnowbooster's got your back!
I agree.... atm it just rewards investment not skill.
Most matches are pointless. About 1/8 is won due to good tactics, the other 7 how much people have spent on cards.
Evening out the rewards should make it more skills focussed and less pointless.

Have you played in any of the tournaments yet ?
There have been games in all the different league levels thus far which tilts the winning in favor of those with skill due to everyone's cards being nuked to each specific rule set.
start-ups should always learn from existing models that work. amen brother

I would like to know more about you. You have very interesting contests, especially the sea battle. And judging by your words, you have already spent on the game, my salary for half a year))
Thanks for taking an interest.
I am happy to hear that you are enjoying the array of contest I put on.
Perhaps, when my game will appear in open access or closed testing. You will come and you will like it.))
What type of game are you creating ?
RPG with management and strategy. In my plans the world is limitless, but everything will start with text fights. Simple quests and exciting plot. Yes, there will be cryptocurrencies. Yes, they can be earned. Let it be the domestic market, as in SM. Yes, there will be rare collectibles, even a unique image from our artist. I gathered my little team. Work has already begun, I am writing a story, create the world in the form of text. I am a director and producer)) I hope we will succeed. The only thing with which we have now is bad is the budget, but we are trying. If something is not clear, I'm sorry, I use Google translator, for Russian. The game will be translated by other people familiar with the language.
Sounds cool, I wish you the best with it.
Great post, @rentmoney. You have written what I've been thinking for a while :0)
Rewarding only the top 10 players of a season, or only the top 4 players in a tournament of 100 players isn't really motivating.
Both the season rewards and the tournaments are won by the same small group of players over and over again.
I do understand that those players want a return on investment, though. But I'd like to see the reward more spread too.
Most people I know don't even take part in tournaments, because - let's face it - most of the tourneys take up a lot of time, and they know they can't beat the 'regulars', so why waste an hour and a half or 2 - only to go home with nothing?
Personally, I love to play tourneys. I see them as a great learning experience. I only have a chance at winning in the silver league, but today I joined a diamond league tournament. I figured I would at least have 4 battles to try to learn from the bigger players (double elimination, BO3). I even managed to win a battle, lol
The season winner gets 250 beta booster packs??? I didn't even know that. Actually, I wish I could go back in time and not read your post, so I wouldn't know. Why on earth does someone with a maxed deck need 250 booster packs, while there are so many people struggling??
Thanks for reading and commenting. I don't know why more don't come to the same conclusion as us and many others. The screen shot proof I provided of another similar modeled BILLION dollar business applying the strategy should be a big red sign to switch to that model. Tournaments are fun but if people play hundreds of them and cash 0 times they will become frustrating instead of being fun thus causing loss of players. Paying out the top 10 - 20 % will create more winners while still allowing the best players to win the bulk of the prizes.
Yes and along with that they get Ark this season. Which is worth about 0.39 as we speak. Its a huge prize for first place. Even if they took 50 boosters away that would be enough for 2 boosters for another 25 players in the league. This would still leave 200 boosters + sponsored prizes for the first place winner which is still a great prize to win.
If you ask me, Dollar signs have taken over their brains, lol.
At first, I thought only the newcomers without money were locked out, but after reading this, I feel like I don't count either.
It would indeed make a lot more sense to keep more players happy than only the top 10. The system is not sustainable like this. But for some reason, they don't want to see...
(Btw, have you seen anything about my experiment in which I try to build a starter deck without investing? If not, check out @itisjustme)
It looks like the founders have taken notice as the next big 1000 Steem game has 16 places paid. To their credit they do take into consideration the suggestions of the players.
Hmmm, interesting experiment you got going on. When I did mine months back I used a starter pack and nothing else. No upgrading cards at all, Silver league was easily attainable with just the starter set cards. With buying/selling cards I suspect a person could reach gold 1 with some luck and an abundance of time due to the fact that I face some level one teams when I am in Gold 1.
There are some key differences in our experiments and I look forward to following the progress and seeing the outcome.
Me too. It would have definitely been lot easier back in the days when there were free booster cards handed out.
I know they do listen to valuable suggestions of their players. I really respect that.
(And maybe it was a coincidence or maybe it was not, but it was aggroed who bought my Silvershield Archers card from the experiment account, lolà
great article
Thanks !
