Steem Monsters Tournaments Update

in #steemmonsters6 years ago (edited)

Many people in the community have expressed feedback about the entry fees that we implemented for the Steem Monsters sponsored tournaments. In the announcement post we mentioned that the entry fees were there to limit those tournaments only to "serious players", but in retrospect, we should have clarified that a bit more.

The reasoning behind the entry fees for the tournaments with higher card level limits was that only players with higher level cards would really be competitive in those tournaments, and we wanted to avoid a situation where lots of players with lower level cards entered just because it was free and had large prizes.

That would really not make for a good experience for either type of player. The players with lower level cards would not really have a chance and those with higher level cards would have to sit through much longer tournaments unnecessarily.

After seeing the community's response to this, however, it is clear that there were better ways for us to address this concern than to add entry fees for everyone in those tournaments. As a result, we are putting in place a new system which we hope will address the community's concerns while still avoiding having large numbers of players in tournaments where they're not competitive.

From now on, tournaments sponsored by Steem Monsters will be free to join for anyone who is currently in the league specified by the tournament or higher.

This means, for example, that a Gold League tournament will be free for any players with a current rating of 1,900 or higher. Players whose current rating is lower than the tournament's league may still join, but they will be required to pay the fee.

Please note that this only applies to tournaments sponsored by Steem Monsters and created by the @steemmonsters account. Any other tournaments will require the fees set by the tournament creator from all entrants.

Additionally we will be refunding anyone who has already paid a fee to enter an upcoming tournament that starts after these changes have been put in place. This may take a day or two so please be patient.

Other Tournament Changes

We have also made the following, smaller changes to the tournament system based on player feedback so far, and we have many more to come over the coming weeks:

  1. Entry fees will now be automatically refunded when leaving a tournament
  2. Players will not be able to enter Gold or Alpha card only tournaments unless they have at least one Gold or Alpha Summoner and at least 5 Gold or Alpha Monsters.
  3. We have removed the two-minute delay between each tournament round. Since each player has up to 5 minutes to enter into the next battle anyway, this additional time was unnecessary and just made the tournaments take longer.
  4. We have made a few changes to the tournament list screen to make it easier to filter tournaments and identify which ones you have already entered.

Off to a good start

As you can see after only the first few days we're at nearly $1,000 USD paid out and will reach over $5,000 in the first two weeks! We're looking forward to watching this grow over time as tournament sponsors join us to show case their good and services to our thousands of players.

Good luck out there and happy hunting for loot!

I think in the tournament section of the Steem Monsters website under "WHEN" there should not only be the date and a time but also a countdown, because the start time varies depending on ones whereabouts, and it's partly somewhat cumbersome to find out the corresponding local time to the given time at the Steem Monsters site.

I believe the times listed under "When" are in local time, not the server time. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

It can well be that you are right! I didn't take part in one of these automated tournaments so far, that means it was just a guess the given time was of a certain time zone always. Even better if local time is shown!

@jaki01 Its in the local timezone, but i would still prefer to see a timer with it. :)

I'm glad you've seen the light on this one. This seems like a reasonable compromise until DEC come out.

Now the seeding really needs to be fixed.

Thank you for listening and making these changes. Impressive.

I love this update. The SM team has shown this community, once again, that they value our feedback. We appreciate the hard work you both have put into the game and into making this community even stronger!

@yabapmatt, thank you for your time in coding this piece into reality (and being there for the community).

@aggroed, thank you for listening to everyone's input.

Now, going to have to find more spare time to raid the loot! :)

There are Battles and Tournaments for all levels of players. Everybody needs to start from the beginning :-)
Check out the how to play section and faq and than start your first fights, good luck!

I commend you for considering the feedback of everyone and adapting changes that reflect the earlier promises made. This along side the DEC tokens that are going to be created will help bring your promises of free $100 daily / $1000 weekly full circle.

I also like all the other changes as well. Refunds upon leaving a tournament is standard as is keeping the fee if a person simply missed but never unregistered. Its great to see the 2 minute wait removed. I would suggest adding a 5 minute break at the hour mark of tournament play.

This morphed a little. We still have $1600 a week going out. It's $100 m-f and $330 sat/sun at various times because of our intrenational audience.

Close enough for me ....

The same amount of funds are given out for free and that is what matters most. Adjusting so all international players get a crack at some games is a positive.

@steemmonsters Did not get a refund for a cancelled 5 Steem tournament the Vaultmex Cryptocurrency Exchange Cup 2
Anyway to resolve or is it manual?

(If not can a feature be implemented for auto-refund on cancelled tournaments if the user did not check in in time?)

Wow what neat service. How did you find out about the transaction?

Above and beyond in rectifying something I'm sure a lot of people did not even realize was an issue. Great job SM Team! Loving tournaments so far, really great system.

its good to be gold(soon to be diamond) keep up folks see you on the ranked battle fields and watch out if you're matched with me in tournaments i'll be out for blood =D

This is a good start, but I would also like to see some protection on the lower level tournaments to prevent the big guns using their experience to pillage the prizes here when they qualify for higher level tournaments. New players won't stick around if it isn't fun for them too

I think a Welcome To Steem-Monsters Special that accounts 30 days or older can't play in would be a good idea. This will help new players get a footing in the game would be a great tool for affiliate to use to sign up new players.

Restricting players with higher level cards from playing in the lower level tournaments isn't a good idea. A person who paid for a Diamond deck did so to open up all possibilities of play. Why would they want to spend all that money just to limit themselves to one aspect of the game ? Bronze / Silver / Gold / Diamond all have different aspects to over come due to the different card stats in each. It makes no sense to restrict a portion of the game to ones who have unlocked all portions of it.

That being said, Another suggestion that is likely better then my Steem-Monsters Special suggestion above is turn the Novice games into the newbie learning league and lock them. Once your account upgrades a summoner pass the novice level you can no longer play in it. It can be advertised as the learning tournaments before entering the official competition, Bronze +. This should give any newbies a sufficient experience on what tournament game play is all about.

I have to respectfully disagree with you. The end goal here, which I think everyone can agree on, is for mass-adoption of the game. If newer players are continually belted by players that are eligible to play in significantly higher tournaments, then the game becomes no fun, they stop playing, they stop buying packs and they tell their friends it's shit.

I think there should be Completely open free for all tournaments that anyone can enter without a fee, from Novice to Champion, and you enter knowing that it is likely to attract a big crowd, prizes can run deep (and possibly have a chat feature for a bit of friendly banter during the tournament).

In addition to that, I think there should be restricted tournaments that are purely for players within certain brackets. The Big Guns don't have to be eligible to enter everything, just like the rookies don't have to be eligible to enter everything. The main aim is to make it fun and interesting for all levels of skill and investment, and a combination of free and paid entry tournaments at different levels, as well as open tournaments where level is irrelevant, in my opinion is the way to do it.

The top 20 players don't have to win everything

I can agree with the majority of that. There is room for all shorts of different variants of tournament play. I think where we differ is I think such games should be one off games and not staple games.

There is also little to no disadvantage to the ones in the smaller leagues when facing a diamond player in that smaller league as stats and game play are different in each league. The player with the advantage in such a situation is the player who more routinely plays in that specific league. Moving down can be just as hard as moving up is. The only outlier I see is the Novice league which will have the newest of the new players learning the basics in which I believe would be a good idea to turn into the Learning League.

Good point!

Excellent changes Congratulations ;)

The fact that you are listening to the community is awesome. This is why you guys are the best team around.

Great job and good response to the community~!

Tournaments are awesome! Can't wait to see some mega prize pools.

I like your fast moves :)

Very nice to read that my reasoning has been heard. Thanks for listening, means a lot to me. Less time waisted, equals more tourneys, equals more fun. Cheers!

Tournaments are great. Apart from the fact that you have no chance at all at the beginning as a player just starting. If you only try to play with cards you have won.

just play in the novice ones. Those should be ok!

Having read a lot of criticisms about this over the last couple of weeks, it’s nice to see that it is being heard, and adjustments made here and there as appropriate.

This is a massive experiment after all. Has anything like this even been tried before?

I haven’t attempted tournaments yet, but I’ll certainly give it a shot at some point.

Feeling really conflicted though... I’m wondering whether it’s wiser investment to just keep leveling up my Alphas and Betas instead of relying on reward cards.....

Just popping my head in here for a second, but this seems like a really fantastic way to resolve the issue. I really like how you guys are taking cues from your fans and listen to the graver issues and try to resolve them in a way that is fair for as many players as possible. If not all of them. Nice job.
