The Phoenix as a mythological animal in different cultures.

in #steempress6 years ago (edited)

The Phoenix has been one of the most mentioned creatures in the different cultures of the world, it represents the sun that is born and dies every day, it is considered an immortal deity that originates the rebirth of a new life. The Arab fables say that he sang a melody so beautiful that the sun stopped his passage through the sky to listen to him.

It is a unique animal that cannot reproduce, it is solitary, it is said that it can live inside volcanoes and there is only one in the world. It is described as a very long-lived bird that is known to be near the end of its days builds, a funeral pyre with wood in its nest to immolate itself, while it sings a soft melody, flaps its wings to fan the fire, then a new bird emerges from the ashes left with greater wisdom than the first.

The myth of the phoenix tells the legend of a bird capable of being reborn from its own ashes, it represents the symbolism of fire, rebirth, sun and immortality. It is a mythological animal originating in the popular legends of the Middle East, India and Africa.
According to ancient stories the Phoenix bird lived in the deserts, it looked like a large heron with two long horned feathers on its head, described as half eagle and half pheasant, or similar to a seagull. Some others say it was a hybrid among the most beautiful birds in the world, with golden or multicolored plumage.

The curious thing about this ancient legend is that it has versions for all cultures and they all agree with the description of a bird with the same characteristics that has a unique way of life that goes against the natural cycle of life.

Ancient Egypt:
He was called Bennu and symbolized the floods of the Nile River and the sun that dies at night and is reborn in the mornings, in the city of Heliopolis, he was venerated in a temple, where it was said that he flew every five hundred years to die in flames and be reborn the next day. It was a symbol of the resurrection in which the Egyptians believed, where after death they live again bathed in glory.
Catholicism:
There is a legend that says that in Eden a tree of roses flourished where a bird of brilliant plumage and sublime song nested, it was the only creature that did not want to eat of the fruits of the sacred tree. After Adam and Eve were driven out of Paradise the spark of an angel's sword fell on their nest, the bird burst into flames and they emerged with a new bird of golden plumage and red wings. Immortality was the gift for his loyalty to the divine command, to the deep knowledge and healing power of his tears.

Greek mythology:
For the Greeks, it was Phoenicoperus, a name that means red wings, that's how they knew all over Roman Europe, about them the Phoenix Bird had deliciously perfumed feathers. In the paintings he is seen as a golden-bellied eagle.

Japanese mythology:
The Sazacu is one of the four divine beasts, represents the south between the four cardinal points, the fire and the summer is represented by a magenta bird covered with flames, its investiture of Phoenix Bird is very present in the Japanese culture of entertainment appearing in the television series known as animes.

Chinese mythology:
The Feng-Huang is a creature with a snake neck, fish body and turtle legs, symbolizes the union of yin-yang, although it has little similarity with the Phoenix Bird has been called the Phoenix for Asians because of the paradox of its legend.
Christianity:

Aztec Mythology:
Quetzalcoatl is a giant snake with dragon-like wings, a creature divine master of the earth and sky, represents light, is one of the main deities of pre-Hispanic civilizations and its legend is related to that of the Phoenix.

Slavic mythology:
The Russians call the Phoenix The Bird of Fire, in the stories they describe it as a magical being in flames capable of illuminating the darkness of any forest, it is a protector and companion of the magical heroes of these stories.
Hindu mythology:
Garuda is a mythological figure of the ancient Indian king of birds, he is credited with the gift of wisdom, in the paintings he is depicted flying Krishna over him and fighting his battles. It devoured the snakes so we can infer that it was the divine weapon against evil.

It is very interesting how such geographically distant localities coincide so much in the description of an ancient deity, taking into account that these legends date back many centuries before modern times and were separated not only by land and sea, but also by language and religious barriers.
