Most local residents in Hangzhou have the habit of burning incense and ringing bells at Lingyin Temple on the first day of the New Year. It is said that on the eve of the New Year, some people will queue up all night, just in order to be the first one to ring the bell which has gone through thousands of years.
I’m a lazy person who can’t get up early or stay up late, so we’re going to burn incense on the first day of the New Year.
（杭州人年初一都有去灵隐寺烧头香、敲钟的习惯，据说年三十晚上就有人去通宵排队，就为了可以排上第一个去敲那口历经千年的古钟。我这种把慵懒贯彻地如此彻底的人当然是折腾不起啦，所以我们准备在年初一的时候去上香。）
There are several reasons choosing this day to take a walk around the West Lake. The main purpose is that we wanna to look forward a good luck, and furthermore, only the first two days during the New Year Festival vocation is sunny. My parents and I invited some friends, and we arranged to meet up in the Tianzhu bus station.
（选择初一来有两个原因，一来是盼个好彩头，初一登高祈福听着就喜庆，二来也是因为只有初一初二两天是晴好天气。我们一家三口约上了三五好友，几个人定在上天竺这里集合。）
Today’s Route : Shangtianzhu - Xiatianzhu - Lingyin Temple - Beishan Road
（我们今天路线是：上天竺-下天竺-灵隐-北山路）
Regardless of whether believe in Buddhism or not, many visitors will go to the Lingyin Temple for a walk when they’re traveling in Hangzhou. It is just as they’ll go to the “Remnant Snow on the Broken Bridge in Winter”, “Liefen Pagoda in Sunset”, “Enjoying tea at dragon well” and other scenic spots by all means.
While the native residents prefer to the Tianzhu Road, where there’re three monasteries, including “Shangtianzhu, Zhongtianzhu and Xiatianzhu”. Few tourists know that Lingyin Temple is a part of Xiatianzhu with the most exuberant incense.
（很多来杭州旅行的游客，都是奔着灵隐去的，就像他们去西湖就一定去断桥、雷峰塔、龙井之类的景点一样。但是我们杭州本地人更多的会选择去天竺路，上头有上天竺、中天竺和下天竺三座寺庙，而灵隐寺只是下天竺里名气最大香火最旺盛的那座庙宇。）
Among them, Xiatianzhu was the earliest to be established with a history of more than 1,660 years. These three temples, even the last one, own the history of thousands of years. Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty named them with Faxi Monastery, Fajing Monastery and Fajing Nunnery and he even autographed the stele personally.
（其中下天竺创建最早，距今已有一千六百六十多年的历史，而创建最晚的上天竺也有上千年的历史。清高宗乾隆命名上、中、下三竺为「法喜寺」、「法净寺」、「法镜寺」，连匾额都是他亲笔御题的。）
When I learnt some background information of Tianzhu, I found that there were two famous places worship Guanyin in China. One is the ashram of avalokitesvara in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province. Another one that few people know about is Shangtianzhu, the Faxi Monastery. This is a local ashram in Hangzhou, and is also the origin of the Baiyi Guanyin in China.
（我在查天竺资料的时候了解到，我国有两个著名的拜观音的道场。一个是我们都知道的浙江舟山观世音菩萨教化众生的道场，这是一个国际性的进香道场；另一个却极少有人知道，那就是上天竺寺。这是杭州的地方性道场，也是中国白衣观音的起源地。）
After buying the tickets, we walked into monastery and immediately feel the whole body stays in peace. The restored Faxi Monastery contains several main buildings, such as Tianwang Temple, Yuantong Temple, etc. We could’t describe our feelings through the words when when saw the Five Hundred Arhats Mountain in the main hall.
（买票后我们走进上天竺大门，立刻就被佛音感染。感觉周身都安静了下来，这一刻我们体会到了什么叫做“不敢高声语，恐惊殿上人”。重新修整后的法喜寺现有天王殿、圆通殿、大雄宝殿、藏经楼等主要建筑。尤其是大雄宝殿的五百罗汉山，文字真的没有办法描绘出当时我们当时的震惊。）
The monastery is a place of pilgrimage, so we didn’t take pictures of the Buddha. The temple is sparsely populated, only the person with sincerely worship and devotion would choose here. There is a long table at the entrance of the main hall, on which there are a lot of free scriptures for pilgrims to read.
We also sat on a bench in the doorway for a short rest, listening to the monks in the main hall chanting buddhist sutras.
（佛门是清修之地，所以我们都没有对着佛像拍照。寺庙内游客很少但香火很旺，大多是怀有信仰或是来虔心祈福都人。大殿门口有一个长桌，上面摆放着很多供香客免费赠阅的经书。我们也坐在门口的长凳上稍作休息，一边听着大殿内的僧人们诵念佛经。）
Walk out of the monastery through the path, we passed the “Sansheng Stone”, “Zhongtianzhu”, “Hangzhou Buddhist Institute”, “Xiatianzhu”, etc. When the TV series To the Sky Kingdom was on broadcast, many young couples went to the Sansheng Stone, which near the Feilai Peak, making the wish that they would like to treasure each other eternally.
（走出寺院沿着小路往前走，途径三生石、中天竺、杭州佛学院、下天竺等。在《三生三世十里桃花》热播的那阵子，不少情侣都找到飞来峰边上的三生石，在这里许下永生永世要携手相伴的愿望。）
In addition, you should pay 20 yuan for the tickets in Shangtianzhu as well as Xiatianzhu seperately, while Zhongtianzhu is free for sightseeing. A ticket can exchange for three sticks of incense, that the monastery are not supported to bring your own incense. There’re delicious meals all with vegetables, which only costs 5 yuan per people. If you go the Taxi Monastery, you won’t miss the meal, cuz the taste is extraordinary indeed.
（另外要说一句，上下天竺门票都是二十元，中天竺不收费。一张门票可以免费请三支香，寺院均不支持自己带香烛进去。寺院里面有素斋，五元一份菜饭都是吃到饱为止。如果你去天竺寺千万不要错过斋饭，里面即使是白菜和豆腐都好吃到落泪。）
Walking along the path, we came to the Lingyin Temple. However, the purpose of our visit to Lingyin is not a temple but a restaurant. I’ll introduce the fabulous restaurant in the next time.
（一路沿着小路走走停停，我们来到了灵隐寺附近。但我们此次造访灵隐的目的并不是寺庙，而是一家餐厅。）
