In 2003, four big things happened.
At the turn of the year, I became a Form 3 student, ready to face the first big exam of my life - the PMR.
Twenty days into 2003, I turned 14, finally leaving behind the unlucky sounding 13.
It was an exciting time for me. With my first big exams looming and my stepping closer to the end of high school, I had also begun thinking about what I would do in uni and which uni I would go to.
Then, on April 1st, 2003, I received a piece of news that would crush my world. One of the Hong Kong actors I had admired, Leslie Cheung had committed suicide.
I couldn't believe it. I read, and re-read the news. Every one carried a translation of his suicide note:
"Depression! Many thanks to all my friends. Many thanks to Professor Felice Lieh-Mak. This year has been so tough. I can't stand it anymore. Many thanks to Mr. Tong. Many thanks to my family. Many thanks to Sister Fei. In my life I have done nothing bad. Why does it have to be like this?"
I cried for days. I didn't understand it, but yet I had to learn to accept it. He was gone.
Then, in the moments before 2003 ended, Anita Mui lost her fight with cervical cancer.
I was walking in a mall and heard the news through a radio broadcast from a shop nearby. I cried uncontrollably.
Anita Mui was one of my biggest inspirations. I felt lost in the months after.
2003 remains in my memory as one of my saddest years.
All I can say is thank you for pouring your heart into all the art you did. You are always loved and missed, Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui.
