LOVE WHAT YOU DO?

in #steempress6 years ago

They say you have to love what you do, because you will be doing it for the rest of your life, but my question really is, if this is a sustainable way of looking at creation and life in general, or just a generalisation that might work for many, but fail to help the rest?

Surely a lot of us creatives enjoy what we do, no question. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be doing it, right? But what about all those people that have a go at creativity in order to vent their unexpressed desires and feelings?

There is of course a differentiator between professionals and hobby artists, but as I see this more as a question of how long one can sustain a steady production of art and not as much a question of expertise, knowledge or skill. Therefore I do not wish to mix up the two in today’s blog and am speaking about creative expression in general.

The problem is, a lot of us may not find one particular medium we prefer, one kind of painting or dance we love or even one form of art, such as photography or video. The truth is, it usually doesn’t come down to style or any other compartmentalisation, but to the person that is creating.

And in the end, the thing that we do is more or less similar to who we are. We don’t do portraits, we don’t make video installations or write plays — all we really do is be creative and express our feelings and beliefs.

Here this platitude of loving what you do does tend to break down, because being creative and expressing oneself is more or less a given if you’re human and your basic needs are being met.

So, where does that leave us?

It’s not really important if you love what you do, because if you like to make things — create something out of nothing — you don’t need to like the exact thing you’re doing.

That isn’t even the main reason why you are doing it; it’s that you like expressing yourself. And instead of pondering about what kind of art you like to do and what king of niche you will try to tackle (if indeed you are tying to go full-time in this convoluted business), just enjoy the ride.

Maybe for a lot of us, it shouldn’t be that we need to love what we do, but to learn to love who we are. If the urge to create is a given (and it is), the real nurture should be directed to the body and the soul, not the choice of tools and materials.
