This car is really common at car shows, I mean you definitely will see an AE86 most of the time on car events, but how frequent can you see this on the road? To be honest I only seen it once on the road, the rest of the times are parked on events.
This car is no stranger to anyone right now because of the famous anime Initial D, an ordinary tofu delivery guy that drives an old car ends up winning street races on the mountains. Even though AE86 is widely used in Japan especially for drifting because of it's lightweight chassis, to the outsiders this car is still a stranger... Until the anime and drifting scene became more popular, this car became a killing, so is the price...
This Corolla AE86 is a Trueno, there is another type called Levin. But everyone still calls them 86 for short. Ever since the new GT86 came out, most of the people name this with AE at the front to prevent misunderstandings. The stock engine is a 1.6 liter 4 stroke putting out almost 140 horsepower. There are variants which are 16valve or 20valve, the picture above shows a 20 valve sticker so I guess it is 20v engine, unfortunately couldn't open the hood to prove it, lols.
The 20valve engine comes with a silver top and black top, a higher end than the 16v that puts up 160 horsepower. The Initial D anime uses a "competition use only" engine that is able to rev until 11000 rpm, rated over 230++ horsepower. Until now I only heard of the engine online, never in real life I actually met one.
Who knows buying an old car, will turn valuable one day...
