Junk Silver

One of my best friends is a stacker. He is the one who originally got me into it back in the day. Unfortunately he is not into social media or the internet really. Lucky for us he brought some of his stuff by the other day and let me snap a few quick shots. Anyone who doesn't know what I mean by junk silver I don't mean that is junk. It's just not .999 silver. There face value here is about $5 however the silver value would be significantly more.

Typically any United States coin before 1965 had about 90% silver in it. Not pennies obviously lol. I have a few myself that I'll share at some point including a nice mercury dime. One of the cool things is you can tell just by the feel ore especially the sound if dropped.

Alright guys who's got some junk?

Wow thats good

Nothing junky about those beautiful coins. Thanks for sharing! @ironshield

I've got a few silver coins. But I found mine through metal detecting. My downtime hobby.

Nice man I always wanted a metal detector when I was young but didn't have the money.

i found quite a few coins metal detecting even found a roman silver denarius! i need to get off steemit for a bit and find some more treasure! :)

Hey, it's never too late to start I say.

That's awesome. I've never found silver coins detecting yet. Only toy cars and modern change and costume jewellery at the beach once.

Still seems neat

I did not know there was some silver bugs on steemit!!!! holy cow I got to share some of the weird stuff I have !! thanks for the post keep up the good work!!

#steemusa !!! woot!!!

Nice man! Check out our tag or our discord #steemsilvergold

I will thanks!! I will try to find the tag

That’s almost as old as me lol

Junk Silver, Constitutional Silver, 90% coinage, whatever you call it I love it and if makes up a nice chunk of my stack.
Every now and then you can still find some out there in circulation too!
Good stuff buddy!

I always ask the cashiers in the old stores in small towns if they can check their drawers for old coins. They are always obliging and I have scored some good coinage.

Thank you!

Nice I never thought about that. A few of my family members work or have worked in banks. It may have worked out in our favor a few times 😉

I always ask the bank, They don't care because they can't keep it. I have gotten Kenndy halves and lots of $2.00 bills.

Nice my mom has a bunch of the Kennedys still and I have a nice Stash of 2s myself.

I keep a small amount of silver on hand in my bug out bag for emergencies, but I have given my collection of coins, which was handed down to me from my dad, to my children and grandchildren. I remember when they first started phasing out silver content in U.S. coins and my Dad, who had always collected some coins, began to gather silver coins by the bag fulls. He had a cousin who ran a local store and gas station who would save out all of the silver and then sell it to Dad at face value, Dad knew that it would one day be worth a lot more. But alas the black sheep of the family began to sneak into Mom and Dads bedroom while they were not home and steal it by the handfuls so that he could go out partying with his friends. By the time that my Dad discovered the treachery much of his collection had been dissolved.

I wonder what the big box full of bags of coins would be worth today, many of them certainly would be some of the rare collectibles. Oh well, it wasn't meant to be, but that black sheep paid and is still paying a terrible price for the deceitfulness. The family relationship was never completely restored to a normal level of trust even after forgiveness was rendered. And you never profit from crime in the long run, that money ran right through him and into booze and wild living, and it has never came back. All that it produced was a lifetime of suffering, grief and regrets. 😞

I'm not sure why I decided to tell that story here but I hope that you don't mind. Maybe some young reader needed to hear it and learn a lesson from the ruined life of another and not make the same kind of mistake themselves. 🤔

Thank you for sharing your story.

I've never heard that term "stacker" before, except as applied to machinery in a factory, never to a coin collector. It's a great collection of old coins that he has! Thanks for sharing! 😊

Long ago, I heard the term "coin silver" but didn't remember that it was about 90% silver. It's good to refresh the old memory! Nice post!

Thank you and I'm glad I could give you the refresher.

You know what is interesting... From all that story of gold and silver backed money, fiat and Bretton Woods system we came to Bitcoin & Crypto...

True but ask any stacker and they will tell you they love the feel of metal.

great article and great stuff , the sliver of crypto is litecoin and bitcoin the gold

I agree and I'm a fan of both of those as well.
