Todays coin that is not actually a coin but is a medallion is a 1980 – 33.625 GRAM .925 ONZA FROM THE CASA DE MONEDA DE MEXICO , which is 41.5 by 3 mm thick . It still contains one troy ounce of .999 silver !
Apart from being one of the best investments on the planet, these silver coins make great gifts and are becoming increasingly rare as the newer Silver Libertad, which is minted at .999 fine silver, has taken its place. On one side of the coin is a representation of an older spanish style coin press surrounded by the words “Casa de Moneda de Mexico” which translated from Spanish means “Mexican Mint,” the obverse side also contains the year of mintage, 1980. The other side of the coin has a representation of a balance surrounded by the words “Una Onza Troy de Plata Pura”, which translated from Spanish means “One Troy Ounce of Pure Silver,” as well as the inscriptions “Ley .925” which indicates that the coin itself, which weighs 33.625 grams, as indicated by the inscription below the balance reading “Peso 33.625 Gramos,” contains at least .925 fine silver overall by law. Finally, in the center at the bottom is an “M” with a small circle above it which we presume is the mark of the Casa de Moneda de Mexico. The coin has a reeded edge and on both faces is bordered by a simple, squared design which is reminiscent of the Aztec and Mayan cultures which once dominated what is today Mexico. These particular coins are slightly larger than most rounds owing to their lower overall purity. Despite this, they are stunningly beautiful and hearken to the era of the conquistadores, the spanish adventurers whose daring forever changed the course of history in the western hemisphere.
The obverse of this piece shows a coin mint called "de balancín" used in the Mexico City Mint to make their first coins. This device uses the rotation of a pole on top with weight on the side to get enough speed to force it to spiral down and mint the coin (later updated to use steam and then electric motor but the method was the same). The legend CASA DE MONEDA DE MEXICO is written around the upper right side . The date is shown on the bottom left
The reverse features scale as a centerpiece. With ounce weight , fineness at top-left , weight in grams at center bottom , and mint under.
The edge of this medallion is reeded .
