Junk Silver or clean Bullion?

in #steemsilvergold7 years ago (edited)

What is more fun? Stacking those wonderful shiny Silver bullion rounds or pre-circulated Silver coins or “Junk Silver” as people call it with a dent or a scratch in them.

On the pictures below I have some American Silver Eagles and some pre-circulation coins from the fifties and sixties of the last century.

Both have their advantages.

The Bullion coin is made from the purest form of Silver 999/1000. This makes them better tradable but the come with a high premium over spot price.

The “Junk” coins contain 720/1000 pure Silver (around 10 grams of silver per coin - Dutch 2.50 Guilders from 1959 till 1966) and you can buy them close to the spot price.

For me it is even, I like both and maybe even the Junk Silver more from a historical perspective.

With regards to tradability it is true that the bullion coins are highly demanded now but I think that in time there will always be a demand for the Junk Silver coins. Specially when precious metals find their way back into the financial markets, it makes them maybe more wanted due to their size and fractional content of silver (a third of an ounce) for the coins shown in the picture.

The fact that these Junk Silver coins come with a less premium can be important, specially for people who just started stacking and don’t want to pay the prices for those “expensive” bullion coins.

By the way, both feel wonderful in your hand 😉!

Of course this is just my opinion, probably many others have a different view on this.

Enjoy!

I really enjoy junk silver when u can find it. I hit a very nice haul last year i got ahold of about 50 rolls of franklin and kennedy halves at wells fargo i bought all they had in the safe. Im guessing someone passed away and the kids exchanged it for Greenbacks stupid move lol.

I'm a fan of junk silver.

My favourite feel is the old one dollar canadian coins. And they “sing” when you give ‘em a good flip!

I prefer the junk silver. I still have Walking Liberty bullion in the tubes, I nver take them out. The junk silver, I like to hold it!

I love junk silver. I like that you can hold it and not worry about making it dirty.

I like to stack both the shiny bullion as well as the "junk" - there's a place for each in your collection.
