The (Real) Money Shot...

When money was actually worth something...

Old US coins (half dollars, quarters and dimes) were made up of 90% silver, that's right the precious metal. Not the junk they make coins out of now. Interestingly, many collectors now refer to these old coins as "junk silver" because they don't possess any numismatic value and are really just worth the spot price of silver in each coin... I love these old things... "Junk silver" makes up a good chunk of my stack, it's sort of the foundation.

I feel like these old coins have stories to tell, if only they could talk... Who knows where that 1937 dime has been, maybe it was some GI's lucky coin and it helped him stay focused through Iwo Jima... OR, maybe it did nothing more than sit in a bank vault for most of its life in circulation... No one will ever, but it's the mystery that counts...

I remember when that real money was circulating.

Good collection! Lyberty and dime amazing!

Thanks! It's always a good day when I add some more coins like these to my collection!

Happy New Year!

I’m a big fan of junk silver too. It seems like holding jokes seller is holding a piece of our country’s history. Hoping you nothing but the best for 2018. Happy new year!

Same to you! Here's to health and wealth!
Happy New year!

I love silver coinage. I'm not a big fan of the term Junk Silver, because it is such a great way to stack! Maybe we should call it "historic silver". Lol. Anyways cheers to you stnwllstrtgc 🍾 stack on, and buy up that "junk" while it's still thought of as that!

Yea I really don't like the junk term either, I have heard it called "Constitutional Silver" before which is kind of cool... I guess 40 years ago or something when it was all just barely out of circulation it made sense to call it junk, but these days it feels like a disservice to call it that haha

Nice post I agree the Liberty dime is amazing, I rarely see those floating around people have them locked up. My great-grandmother had a gold coin that was made in 1858 I believe. She kept it despite the Depression, as well as the government mandate to turn in all gold and making it illegal. Its always the people that make the currency so interesting as you mentioned above. Thanks for the post it brings a smile.

Thise old halves and the Mercury dimes are da bomb!

I miss that circulating silver coinage -- the tokens we use now are soooo lame! Will be following you....

I love looking at old coins as well. Old stuff is always fascinating to me especially when it's still in good condition.
