The Steem Sister Show - Episode 10 // Money and Personal Finance

in #steemsistershow7 years ago (edited)

Welcome to the tenth episode of the Steem Sister Show!

Your hosts are @coruscate and @maryjaney. We are two sisters using the Steem blockchain to chat about our life experiences and provide a little entertainment value to the Steemit Community.

Topic of this Episode – Money and Personal Finance

In this episode, we talk all about our relationship to money, what actually makes money worth something, how we spend, save and invest, and much more!

Here is a list of questions covered in today’s episode:

  • How does the word money make you feel?
  • Where do you think you spend the most money every month?
  • Audience question from @ralk98 – Do you prefer to save money or invest it?
  • Audience question from @felix.herrmann – When did you realize that the US dollar was backed by thin air?
  • Audience question from @goldmatters – Is Gold Money? (there may be a Mene jewelry sighting!)
  • What would be the hardest expense for you to cut out?
  • How did your upbringing influence your views on money?
  • Can debt be a helpful tool?

What is the Steem Sister Show All About?

We aim to bring more “non-crypto” related content to the Steem Blockchain. Although there is nothing wrong with this kind of content (@corsucate even posts on crypto related material sometimes) – we want to help create a better onboarding experience for new users. We talk a lot about attracting new users to the platform – but if the trending page is filled with crypto posts and flagging wars, they are likely to lose interest quickly.

We hope that by creating content that is more similar to what they are used to seeing on other social media sites – they will feel more excited about being here and creating content of their own!

How Does It Work?

We pick a different topic every episode, and then throw totally random questions about that topic in a hat and go back and forth. We always have a mix of our own questions and some audience questions. Our rule is that we cannot tell each other our answers before filming! So you guys are getting our raw, unfiltered reactions here.

Every episode we announce the next week’s topic so people can submit questions.

Want to win some SBD??

If we chose to answer your question in the next show… we will send you 2 SBD! Now that’s some easy money.

Next Week’s Topic : Home

In next Friday’s episode – we will talk all about what we think makes a home… feel like a home. We’ll be discussing what items we can’t live without, our personal decorating style, what makes a home feel like your safe haven or creative space, and how messy or organized we are.

So send us your questions!! Anything on the topic of making a home is fair game. We have fun coming up with questions, but are always pleasantly surprised by how creative our audience is! My favorite questions always seem to come from you guys. (plus you can make a little easy mullah if we choose your question!)

Our home episode will air one week from today.

Please support Dtube and stream this video through their service. Here is a YouTube link for those who need it though.

That’s a Wrap!

We hope you enjoyed watching our episode on money and personal finance! We certainly had a fun time filming it and talking more about these important topics.

If you have any thoughts or questions that came up from our Money episode – feel free to shoot them in the comments bellow.

Next up, we have our episode on food airing next Tuesday. Thanks for watching and we’ll see you guys in the next episode!

With Love,

The Steem Sisters

This was such a good episode! ( I was tempting to say gold episode). The Menē shoutout was definitely the best part. Thanks for answering my question. I also enjoying the home as an investment non propaganda talk! I actually made the decision to never use the term “buy a house” unless some is paying in full (which is pretty rare). I now just say “borrowing a house” . Congrats on the anti debt stance. Totally agree!

haha that's a great way to put it! Borrowing a house is a more accurate way to put it.

I've thought about waiting to buy a house until I can pay for it in full too. The only issue with that is what I mentioned in the video about not tying up too much of my "stash" in a house, when that same amount of money could be growing in value the market. Maybe one day when i'm super set up... I'll pay cash for a house if it's a small percentage of my overall wealth.

Some day. :)

I like the way you think :)

Hahaha, I've never heard that, but that is gold. Considering you can get kicked out of your home if your miss a payment or two, you definitely are borrowing it.

It's so weird and great that my foray into crypto has led back to precious metals... as investments they're surprisingly similar, even though one is age-old and one is super-digital.

I'm with you @goldmatters!
Yeahh, This is the gold episode during this time 💃

Great episode sisters! You two interact so well, it's a great watch!

We really struggle with the eating out aspect too... it's so much more expensive than eating in... but we get tired and lazy and just break. It's funny, my partners parents don't even think about it, they'll whip up something before anyone gets starvatious or go down to the shops to get ingredients to make up something quick. They had young kids during Australia's recession though, and so developed good routines.

Being organised is the key there. I know once I get too hungry or too tired I'm useless...

I'm definitely more like Lea debt-wise, and my partner is more like Mary Janey... I hate the idea of debt but my partner sees it as a useful tool. We've owned a fair amount of property together, and with all the fees/costs associated, I'm not super sure people come out ahead. In Australia we had 4 properties, when we left we sold one for a record amount in the area, one just broke even, and 2 we haven't been able to sell. I'm honestly not sure property is the investment people quite think it is... but unless you kept amazing records it'd be crazy hard to tell either way.

We have bought in the US, but that's solely because rent in Portland is ridic.

So, my question to you both... have either of you (or your parents when you were living with them) ever renovated your home, and was that exciting or stressful for you? If you haven't... would you like to renovate yourselves or would you prefer contractors to come in, get it done and it's finished?

I'm so glad you enjoyed this episode @aussieninja! Thanks for sharing your experience with real estate. Your right, most people don't fully understand all the costs associated and only think of it as an investment.

I definitely know a lot of people who have made good money on real estate - but it's because they have a calculated formula of what they are looking for and what they can afford. I've always thought people who buy fixer upper's and then re-sell them seem to have a lot of fun with that and it can definitely be something that pays off once you figure out how to streamline processes and get efficient with the remodel costs.

Also, i don't blame you for not wanting to rent in Portland! SO expensive! I live in Bellingham and our prices are pretty inflated - but nothing like you guys or even Seattle.

Great question for next week too!! That would be a fun one to discuss! We are filming the Food episode too and I know you had a ton of good ones on that one too. haha

Thanks for always submitting such fun and interesting questions!! <3

Thank you for choosing my listener question!
I'm in the same situation than Mary, I'm trying to buy important stuff I need (specially tools for my job as a freelancer), and then when I have money saved and enough to get ends meet and all of my requirements that I needed, I will invest it, that's nice because you are literally making money while you sleep :3

Also, thank you for uploading the Youtube video too! the internet here in Venezuela is VERY slow, and I had to wait like 1 hour until the Dlive video was loaded, haha, but now it's better!

Warm hugs from this side of the continent!

That's a tough place to be in. Barely making ends meet is really stressful. :( Especially when you need tools for work!

Thanks for the feedback on the addition of the YouTube link too. I've recently started adding that and have gotten a lot of positive responses from it. :)

Thank God for the success of the show..more grease to your elbow. My question on home goes thus; Do you always allow your favorite color to reflect in the settings of your home? ❤@coruscate and @maryjaney. @oxygen02 cares.

Hi @oxygen02! Thanks for watching this episode and submitting a question for next time! :)

Dollar backed by thin air, thanks to Nixon so is other currencies in the world.

Buffet will disagree with the issue of gold though in a way as it doesn't give the bearer value the longer you hold it, it's value is subjective, in my views it's way better than worthless paper that we waste even more money printing.

Food is an unshakable expense if you want to be healthy especially, on my side of the world organic food is actually more expensive than inorganic food, a price to pay for trying to stay healthy.

My question for the next episode - Will it work out if you live with a messy partner?

Thanks for sharing us about your financial talk.
I won't miss your show 😅.

So for the next question, let me ask you, What is the very essential item you must have at home? And why do you think that item is important for you?

aww thanks for being so loyal with watching our show! Thanks for submitting a question for next week!

Hey there! My name is M3, and I'm giving you an pvote, and a subscribe! A bunch of us are sort of from YouTube, but got really sick of it, and are trying to really promote DTube. There's getting to be a decent little community on here, and I just thought I'd help you out a bit. If you like music-themed, somewhat funny things, that's what I do. Cheers ``

Omg i need a new car too lol :(

That's tough! Mary's car keeps breaking down on her... hopefully you are both able to get new cars soon!

Great sisters! Keep shining!

I mean, what are the main colors you use for your decorations? sober? Funny? your decorations are based on the classic? or rather the modern? Being sisters, did you ever want to have a lamp (or any other item) like that in your rooms? I hope the translator is helping me to ask the right questions with the right words!

Thanks for the great questions @melvadg! The translator came through just fine. I can get a jist of your quesions! :)

Another day, another great video! We've been looking around DTube for something to talk about, and this seemed like a great example. We liked this so much, we put it on the list of OneLoveDTube Video Picks of the day!
