Mr Federer has been awe inspiring in so many ways to those that tracked his career. I find myself fortunate enough to have followed his whole career and a few years ago when his dominance was questioned by the likes of Nadal and Djokovic, we knew that the greatest ever player of Tennis has seen his time come and go. We were nevertheless thankful for the glory he brought to Tennis and the magic he created on the courts.
His style of effortless effort was flawless. He played with such grace that it would shame a ballet dancer. As much as I enjoyed the raw power of Cilic and Djokovic, it took the chess like beauty away from Tennis. The muscle bound grinder Nadal was a breath of fresh air and his passion was astounding. The post Federer dominance era of Tennis was alive but in a different way. It was more like Mortal Kombat.
Just like in basketball, after Michael Jordan the beauty that fascinated me once was gone. Just like after Muhammad Ali in boxing, there were still punches thrown but elegance was just not there. It will not be the same without Michael Phelps in swimming. There will be champs but no champion of champs. Luckily I will still have Katie ledecky to watch. I missed Roger Federer in all those ways and more.
Federer wore his emotions on his sleeve. He cried. He was distraught. His legacy was being dismantled. He plays Tennis like Magnus Carlsen plays chess. How could he in his ripe Tennis year’s beat the devastating power of the younger ones?He devised a strategy. He worked and worked. And he came back greater than ever. In the Australian open 2018, he coursed into the finals without losing a set. He met the younger and determined Cilic again in the finals. It was a grueling fight.
The final score 6-2, 7-5(tie breaker), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in favor of Roger Federer. Long live the king!
