Violence in Barcelona over Catalonia’s push for Independence almost led to the game being canceled.

Sergio Busquets opened the scoring by heading home from a Lionel Messi corner kick shortly after the halftime.

Lionel Messi added two goals beating the offside trap for the first and adding the 2nd minutes later after a nice team move.

Barcelona was in upheaval as Spanish forces battered civilians who came out to vote in what the Spanish government deemed an ‘illegal’ referendum. The club tried to have the game canceled, but their plea was denied by the La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation which threatened with a points deduction and automatic defeat if they didn’t go ahead with the game.

Thousands of fans stood outside the Nou Camp to protest the match, but Barcelona decided to go ahead with the game, playing behind closed doors.

The hosts started flatly but a Lionel Messi penalty in the 22nd minute was pushed out by the keeper who also pushed out Luis Suarez’s rebound shot. After that, Las Palmas grew into the game, and Callieri struck the post for the visitors in the 44th minute, but there were no goals in the first half.

The 2nd half saw the introduction of Iniesta for Aleix Vidal and Ivan Rakitic for Paulinho. Rakitic’s shot at the keeper led to a corner kick. Sergio Busquets was at the end of Lionel Messi’s delivery to give Barcelona a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute.

Barcelona took control of the game, and Luis Suarez should have added a 2nd, but he went down while trying to take the ball around the keeper and was correctly booked for diving.

The presence of Iniesta gave Messi more space, and in the 71st minute he dribbled around the keeper and played the ball into the net after being put through by Denis Suarez.

Messi added a 2nd 7 minutes later after a super team move which saw Messi receive the ball in front of the keeper to slot it home for his 2nd and Barcelona’s 3rd goal of the game.

Barcelona’s win is their 9th in a row, and it sees them top the table with perfect 21 points after 7 league games.
