  • Lionel Messi scored 34 league goals last season to emerge as the La Liga’s top scorer
  • Messi’s arch-rival, Cristiano Ronaldo managed 25 La Liga goals last season
  • Cristiano Ronaldo has won the European top scorer award on 4 occasions (2008, 2011, 2014 and 2015)
  • Messi equaled Ronaldo’s record with a 4th award as Europe’s top scorer last Friday
  • The leading eight scorers were of seven different nationalities and they all ply their trade in one of the top seven leagues in Europe.
  • The most prolific striker of the 2016/17 season was Spanish youngster Kike Gómez, found in Gibraltar, where he netted 27 goals in 16 games for Europa F.C. (a return of 1.7 goals per game)

FC Barcelona ace, Lionel Messi, has landed another massive award. The talented Barcelona forward has added a new trophy to his already bulging cabinet of trophies with yet another one.
Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, who last won Europe's Golden Boot award in 2013, was all smiles last Friday as he scooped the prestigious European Top scorer award, for scoring the most league goals among each of the Top European leagues.
By picking up the award during the ceremony on Friday, Messi equaled Cristiano Ronaldo’s record tally of four European Top Scorer wins.
Lionel Messi scored 37 times in the 2016/2017 La Liga season, to emerge the highest scorer all over Europe, and claim the award.
This is the fourth time Lionel Messi claimed the award, after he last won in 2009/2010 (34), 2011/12 (50 goals) and 2012/13 (46 goals).

Messi’s 37 goals last season in the La Liga came in 34 top-flight matches. The tally was insurmountable and saw him claim the top charts over other European top scorers such as PSG’s Edinson Cavani (34), Sporting CP’s Bas Dost (34). Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (31) and Robert Lewandoski (30), who were the other players to score 30 goals or more in the 2016/2017 season.
Cristiano Ronaldo won the award in 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2015, but could only manage 25 league goals last season and did not feature in the top five of the list.
Luis Suarez who won the award in the 2015/2016 season finished fifth in the standings with 29 league goals, and presented the trophy to Lionel Messi.

Lionel Messi is one of a kind. It is like the ball sticks to his leg with his dribbling ability. I am a fan of him as well as Ronaldo. Both have their own skills and styles. It is like comparing an orange to an apple. I wish the best for both. Thanks for sharing.
