The Chicago Cubs got off to a great start today when they played the Miami Marlins down in Florida. They came in as heavy favorites to win the game and the series against an undermanned Marlin team. New Marlins owner Derrek Jeter traded away their best player, Giancarlo Stanton, last year to the New York Yankees and the fans lost all faith that the new ownership was seriously interested in winning.

The Cubs sent their number 1 ace, Jon Lester, to the mound to go against Jose Urena of the Marlins. Lester and the Cubs were a huge favorite at -215 but the game was too close for comfort, at least in the first half of the action.
Chicago Cubs center fielder and lead off man, Ian Happ, ripped a lead off home run to get the game started. But that was just the start of 3 first inning runs for the Cubies. Heyward and Baez would drive in runs and give Lester a nice lead.
But the Cubs lefty would struggle in the third inning. Miami would tie the game 4-4 after a Garrett Cooper single. Lester would be taken out of the game and Steve Cishek would come in and throw 1.2 innings of shutout ball.

Kyle Schwarber would launch his first homer of the year in the 7th inning and give the Cubs a two run lead. That would give the team a nice breath of relief. Tommy La Stella would add two more runs for the Cubs in the 7th inning as well and they would cruise to an 8-4 win on opening day.
Kyle Hendricks will get the ball for Chicago on Friday and go against the Marlins Caleb Smith. The Cubs are heavy favorites at -215.

It was a great game! As a sports photographer there where so many moments in the game. Douglas alum Rizzo paid tribute to his highschool with #MSDStrong engraved on his bat. And both Marlins and Cubs uniforms where adorned with the MSD support ribbon.
