In a full day of action, the Pittsburgh Pirates were able to route the Brewers in Milwaukee, 9-0, to pull a little closer in the competitive Central. The Rockies got a home run from Ian Desmond in the top of the 8th to get past the Mets in Queens, 3-2, and the Athletics outlasted the Baltimore Orioles in Oakland for a 2-1 victory.
We start in Milwaukee, where the Brewers were held to just 2 hits in the game, while the Pirates piled up 13 hits and 9 runs. Left-fielder Cory Dickerson went 3/5 with a double and 2 RBIs, and shortstop Jordy Mercer came up big as well, going 3/4 with a run scored, a home run, and 2 RBIs. Six different players drove in at least 1-run for the Pirates in an overall balanced offensive performance.
Chad Kuhl went 7 strong innings, and allowed just 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 8 to get the win. The Pirates improved to 19-16 on the season and are continuing to keep pace in a very competitive NL Central. The Brewers fell to 20-15 and continue to sit in the thick of the jumbled Central. Domingo Santana went 1/2 with a walk for the Brew Crew, as that was about all Milwaukee could muster in this one.
Over to Queens, where the Colorado Rockies completed a weekend sweep of the Mets with a 3-2 victory. It was the fifth consecutive win overall for the Rockies, who find themselves a season-best 5 games over .500 at 20-15. The Mets dropped to 17-15 after the sweep and third in the NL East, but are just 1.5 games behind the Braves. It was timely hitting from the Rockies who surrendered 2 runs in the bottom of the first, but shut-down New York the rest of the way. Kyle Freeland got the win for Colorado, as he lasted 7 innings and surrendered 4 hits, 2 runs, with just 1 walk, and struck-out 8.
Across to the west coast, where the Oakland Athletics continue to play surprisingly solid baseball as they outlasted the Orioles 2-1. The A's used a groundout and a double in the bottom of the 4th to plate a pair of runs, as that proved to be all the offense that was needed. Andrew Triggs was outstanding for the Oakland, going 7 innings and allowing just 2 hits, 1 run, no walks, and punching 9 strikeouts to get the win. The right-hander improved to 3-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 4.41. For the A's, they improved to 18-16 and continue to play good baseball in the incredibly difficult AL Central. The Orioles dropped to just 8-26 as they committed nearly as many errors (2) as hits (3). Oakland sits just 3.0 games back of the Angels and 2.0 back of the defending Champion Astros.
