Shohei Ohtani’s stellar pitching performance lifted the L.A. Angels over the Seattle Mariners in Safeco Field, Seattle, yesterday afternoon. The game wrapped up the series, and with the dub, the Angels ended up taking the series, winning two to Seattle’s one. During this series, future HOF slugger, Albert Pujols drove in his 3000th career hit, securing yet another accolade under his ever-growing belt. Last but not least, the Angels lived up to their projection, as they were -125 favorites in a game that was projected to have 8.5 runs.
Ohtani made it through 6 innings, before exhausting his arm with 96 pitches. Through 6, Ohtani allowed 6 men to board the bags, 2 men to skip to the bag, and he struck out one more than a handful. Not only did he receive his third win of the season, but he also dropped his ERA from a 4.43 to a 4.10. He will take the mound again this Saturday when the Angels host the Twins.
Once an exquisite pitcher, Felix Hernandez lost his third game of the season. He is now only sitting one game above 500 with a 4-3 record. Hernandez allowed 5 runs to cross the plate on 7 hits and 4 walks. Hernandez’s only satisfying statistic was the 5 K’s he threw, but even that is not impressive for a former All-star.
Zack Cozart put the first run on the board in the top of the second with a long ball to deep left field. Cozart finished the game with one more hit, in the form of a double, and went 2/4 on the day. Shortly after Cozart’s blast, Chris Young, the Angels most inferior batter, clinched an 8+ game drought. Mike Trout hit the Angels third and final homerun. Trout finished 3/4 with a walk and a stolen base. Ryon Healy was the only Mariner who produced anything on the Seattle club, hitting a two run homer.
