Argentine forward Sergio Aguero was all smiles as he and his Manchester City side demolished a Leicester City, in a game that showed that the Manchester side has overcome their loss to Liverpool, which dented their unbeaten record this season.
Belgian playmaker Kevin De Bruyne was the assist master once again, as he provided the assists for Manchester City’s first three goals; taking his premier league assist tally to 14 for the season, topping the chart ahead of team-mate Leroy Sane with 10 assists.
As it happened:
Manchester City’s onslaught began with a goal in the third minute after Kevin De Bruyne picked out Raheem Sterling at the back post, from which the English star scored to give City the lead, unlike his miss last weekend against Burnley from a similar position. Leicester City who were playing with five defenders at the back, didn’t immediately lie over, after City’s lead though. A mistake by City’s Nicolas Otamendi allowed a quick footed Jamie Vardy to score his 13th goal of the season.
City responded to Leicester’s equalizer with two quick goals in a space of five minutes. Both goals were orchestrated by a superb Kevin De Bruyne and finished by Sergio Aguero for his first and second goal of the match.
Aguero’s hat-trick didn’t take long to arrive, and it came after a horrendous clearance by Leicester’s goalie, Schmeichel, which Aguero dinked above the keeper. City’s fifth goal and Aguero’s fourth on the night, was equally brilliant as Aguero stole the ball from Leicester substitute Phil Foden, and fired via the underside of the bar, to seal a comfortable and convincing win for Guardiola’s side.
Pep Guardiola was pleased with his sides finishing and said Sergio Aguero who bagged four goals on the night was “important to us”.
Aguero is has now taken his goal tally for 2018 to 13 goals in just 10 games. The Argentine now has 21 goals, for the season. He is now the only player to have scored four or more goals in a single premier league match on three different occasions.
The diminutive forward is also the 12th on the all-time premier league’s goal scorer’s chart, and is only the fourth player - only behind Thierry Henry (5), Alan Shearer, and Harry Kane - to score 20 or more goals in four consecutive seasons in the premier league’s history.
Riyad Mahrez returns:
Leicester City’s Algerian midfielder, Riyad Mahrez, who at mid-week seemed certain to miss the clash between his present team Leicester and the team that almost signed him weeks ago, surprisingly featured in the second-half of the game after 10 days of absence from the side.
Mahrez trained with the side on Friday which led to Coach Claude Puel including him in the list against Manchester City. The Algerian didn’t make much of an impact in the game; as he managed only nine touches in the oppositions half. However the important thing, as his manager Claude Puel put it, is that he is back in the team. And their push for a European spot finish this season continues.
