The NFL Draft is next month and there is more anticipation for the Top 5 picks than ever before. Let’s take a look at each of the potential picks and look back at their college careers. Next we will dive into the career of the man from the West. Josh Allen is 6’5 and 233 pounds and is from the University of Wyoming. He has entered the draft after playing 3 years of college ball.
Josh Allen burst onto the scene as a sophomore at Wyoming. He threw for over 3,000 yards and completed 56 % of his passes. Allen would throw 28 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. That would be good for a Quarterback Rating of 144.9. He would also run the ball for over 500 yards and his physical presence quickly grabbed the attention of NFL scouts. Allen gained a lot of attention last summer leading up to his junior season and made the cover of some preseason college football magazines. He wasn’t getting the Sam Darnold type hype, but he wasn’t too far behind either.
The junior year of Josh Allen would not resemble much of his sophomore season. He really struggled and his numbers were extremely underwhelming. Allen only threw for 1,812 yards and 16 touchdowns. He did complete 56% of his passes again and only threw 6 interceptions, but these numbers against an inferior Mountain West Conference are VERY concerning.
Josh Allen reminds me a lot of another highly touted college quarterback that is now sitting on the bench for the New York Jets. Christian Hackenburg was a lock to be a top pick after his sophomore year, but came back to Penn State for his junior season. His numbers, like Allen’s, got worse and worse. The similarities do not mean that Allen will be an NFL bust like Hackenburg appears to be, but they are not a good sign either. Like with Darnold, the “experts” refuse to back down on Allen.

I like Allen a lot and have him as the # 1 QB going into the draft. I know his numbers were underwhelming this past year, but some of it needs to be attributed to the talent that was lost around him from a surprisingly good Wyoming team his Sophomore season. Wyoming can't refill the cupboard like a lot of other programs out there. Keep in mind Carson Wentz played at North Dakota State, who def played against inferior competition, and obviously he has turned out to be a great player. He will need to be much more accurate at the next level though.
