The new Top 25 college basketball rankings are out after a hectic week that was full of upsets and dynamite performances. But there is one team that we want to focus on that is not getting the respect that they deserve. The Cincinnati Bearcats have moved up to number 6 in the country and are one of the hottest teams in all of college basketball.
Cincinnati plays in the American Conference and are a perfect 10-0 in league play. In fact, they have won 14 straight games after losing back to back games against Xavier and Florida. Since then, they have been on fire.
The Bearcats are not a high powered offense. They rely heavily on their defense. They are the second best defensive team in the country behind the Virginia Cavaliers. They have only allowed 1 team in their last 15 games to reach the 70 point mark. Head coach Mick Cronin is a defensive genius and has his smothering mix of zone and man to man shutting down almost everyone.
The leading scorer for Cincinnati is junior guard Jacob Evans III at 14.1 points per game. He is having his best season and knocking down nearly 42% from the 3 point line. Senior Gary Clark is second on the team in scoring at 13 points per game. The 6’8 forward is also averaging 9 rebounds a game and is the main interior presence for the Bearcats. Kyle Washington and Jarren Cumberland are also averaging in double figures for Cincinnati.
The Bearcats play their next game at home against UCF before traveling on the road against SMU and Houston. But their game on February 18 at home against the Wichita State Shockers will be their biggest test that remains on their regular season schedule and will go a long way toward crowing the conference title.
