Fiberoptic Internet Update: Much Faster, But More Improvement is Possible

in #steemstem7 years ago

Yesterday I wrote about having 1 gig fiber hooked up. I used the modem I bought ahead of time (c1000z) and the result? Unacceptably slow speeds over wifi.

I kept the modem they left me with however and decided to try that out today, after discovering they were only charging market price for it anyway. The result?

That's more like it! But still a far cry from what is achievable with the right equipment. After navigating the robot voice automated tech support to the point where I could speak with a human, I got my PPPD ID and password to put into the new modem, and could get online again.

From there, I ordered a couple of the fastest but cheapest USB 802.11ac 5Ghz adapter I could find (ASUS makes it). This will get my main PC, laptop and media center PC online at something like 867Mbps each. I also ordered some flat ethernet cable to see whether it's worth it to attempt a direct connection.

This is turning out to be much more expensive than I thought. What with the lawn care equipment I had to buy recently and SBD tanking again, I'm feeling pretty nervous about my near future. It's funny how many hidden costs there are when you sign up for basically anything at all.

Stay Cozy!

@alexbeyman,
Now the download speed is doubled! This is pretty cool! I think it's time to upgrade my Wifi unit too!

Cheers~

You are quite a genius Alex.
You know almost everything dude.
Anyways if you can get to 900 Mbps why settle for less. I haven't seen more than 5mbps here. Lol

This will get my main PC, laptop and media center PC online at something like 867Mbps each
Man 867Mbps that's what I can always dream of, in India we are offered with a speed of 2Mbps and we think that's sufficient. 867Mbs, I think we are 100 years behind than your nation.

haha we are having 2mbps
that means 400 years behind ,lol

when you sign up for anything new there are always more hidden costs which increase as the work progresses
bdw what can person do with 867Mbps
i have only 2mbps i can live with it

I can only be happy for you since you have the possibility to find new methods or solutions for your internet, I have to keep my 512bps, because here in my neighborhood the thieves made their own stolen the internet cables that go from posts to poles, and the internet company, admits that it does not place them because there is no material or the cable is too expensive to replace it.

That’s a huge progress. I don’t even have 50mbps on my WiFi and it’s already what I need. I know it’s great for games if you play online. Sometime these cable companies have promotions. You can try negotiate with them when it comes to price. With me it sometimes works, sometimes it doesn’t. You never loose if you try.
👍

Oh I think I should get a hold of the WiFi adapter. Seems interestingly fast compared to the speed at which I connect with any of my devices.
Everything is quite expensive this days

You are right @alexbeyman. When we buy something, we must prepare our mental for an unexpected cost as a consequence.

Please be patient my brother. I once read a book saying that if the beginning of a transaction feels a lot of trouble, then the situation will turn around and improve for the future.

Oh, I thought you were navigating your robot voice.
It was actually an automated support robot voice, phew...
I was scared that you've already become a complete robot and would come and annihilate me for all troll comments that I've written to you in the last couple of months lmao :D

Great update and really great
The Internet has become more sophisticated
Thank you for the great information, my friend

I am very happy. Good work. But I am interested in this tool. USB ac3nano. I just saw. I will learn more with this USB. Thank you for providing this information. Is this tool like a Mobile hotspot?

No. It plugs into a computer to give it the ability to connect to 802.11ac, a new high speed wifi standard.

You can file a complaint @alexbeyman. Tell Century Link that the network speed you get does not match the specifications they offer.

Well atleast the speed is better from that of yesterday so its an improvement even though its costing you more money. I hope this is the last time you will be spending money on it

before we buy something about the internet, many bids with network speed, but after used not according to what is promoted, for us often use free wifi provided, hopefully your problem @alexbeyman can be overcome, hehehe

It's okay @alexbeyman. Someday you will be able to maximize the functionality of it all. I believe you can do it.

Happy swim mr alex with new internet Super fast. Hopefully the future gets better and no problem. Incredible speednya. Like the GP motto.

This speed is still a million miles further away from my current one.. damn!

Good job doing all that by yourself.

had to buy recently and SBD tanking again

A rebound will start any day now.
So keep steeming

Patience @alex this tool we use for sustainability and our support for activity on the internet. regardless of the price that comes out to fit our needs, why not ...

They like to nickel and dime people to death. Then there is the taxes on the service, the fcc fees on the service, and regulatory fees on the service.

Alex - $80 per month is a cheap rate comparing to my country... I think you won't download movies anymore... You can buffer them...

+W+

Don't know if anyone's mentioned it already, but powerline ethernet is often a great way to get fast speeds via ethernet cable, but without cluttering your home up with cables snaking around between your PC and the router. Essentially it uses your home's electrical wiring to send the data around, and it works amazingly well.

Here's an example I found that gives you two ports along with a pass through plug so you don't use up the wall's:

https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Powerline-adapter-Ethernet-Passthrough/dp/B0778Y6K6N/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1527088903&sr=8-8&keywords=powerline+ethernet

Granted, nothing works as well as true Cat6 or Cat5A cable going directly between the router and the end device, but this comes pretty close, and is way more reliable than wifi.

Compared to what you could actually achieve that isn't too much BUT it's still fast af
