I was tutoring some set of high school graduate on electromagnetic induction today and on the process my battery percentage was about 3%, and the power holders decided to seize their light, I was really bothered. Then suddenly what came to to my mind was "Why on earth do I need power holder when I got physics?, yes, Electromagnetic induction inspired me"
Current can be generated by electromagnetic induction, where no socket or charger is necessarily needed. This is a pure application of electromagnetic induction. All you need is a very strong magnet and a wounded coiled wire in an helix pattern as illustrated in the image below
a solenoid wire
What is Electromagnetic induction?
The principle of electromagnetic induction was discovered by Michael Faraday, an English physicist and chemist and one of the greatest scientists of the 19th century.
When a magnet is plunged into a coil, current is observed to be flowing in the coil. When the magnet is being pulled away from the coil, current is still observed to be flowing but now in the opposite direction.
When the magnet is held and the coil is moved away from the magnet, current will still be observed to be flowing in the coil. However when both the coil and the magnet are stationary, there will be no current flow. The phenomenon of current production as a result of relative motion between the coil and the magnet is called Electromagnetic Induction. The current flowing in the coil is called The Induced Current and it is as a result of the induced Electromotive force(emf).
Emf is the driving force which brings about current flow. It is also the potential set up on open circuit(when the circuit is not delivering current).
Applying this concept to charge a phone
Applying this concept to charge your phone is very simple. All you need is a strong magnet, a coil and a cut out part of a charger cable, as we require the port that connects to the phone.
The end of the cut out cable is connected to the ends of the wounded coil and a magnet is then plunged into the coil. If the cable is then connected to a phone, current is then observed to flow through, there we go, the phone begin to charge up. It must be noted that current only flow through if there is relative motion between the magnet and the coil, because of the changing magnetic field in the coil which causes an induced emf and eventually causes a flowing current in the coil. This is going to require little energy as you have to keep the magnet moving in the coil continuously. The image below illustrates when the end of the coil is connected to a small lamp. The lamp is observed to be illuminated signifying a current is flowing in the coil.
All this concept I thought of while putting the college aspirants true electromagnetic induction. Sorry, I forgot to mention, I wasn't able to get a magnet nor a coil. My phone still died anyways. This basic concept can help you charge your phone without depending on the on power holding company.
Screw power holding company, physics got my back.
