SUMMER ADVENTURES - Episode 30 - IN THE THORNY AROMATIC WILDERNESS

in #steemstem5 years ago

There are places here, along the coastline ...

... among the forests and terrains covered with bushes ...

( Enlargeable )

... open spaces ...

... a bit like meadows ...

... but covered with a variety ...

... of robust plants ...

... instead of grass ...

... most of them thorny...

... hairy ...

... or very ...

... aromatic ... like the fennel ... in the web-like structure of its leaves ...

... a small cicada species, one that prefers this more grounded habitat to the trees and sings a much different melody than the bigger species here, the melody sounds a bit like the buzz, have found a good place to hide and rest ...

... for many caterpillars ...

... this world made of intricate plant anatomies ...

... tightly intertwined ...

... and sheltered by a multitude of thorns ...

... is a great hidden ...

... aromatic feeding ground ...

... I understand their voracious appetite - I like the fennel too

... these ones ...

... build a loose silky shelter ...

... around their feeding place ...

... the most numerous insects here, especially on the thorny plants ...

... are crickets ...

( Enlargeable )

... hordes of crickets are crawling around ...

... and the beautiful sound of their melodies is the greatest soundtrack for the warm summer nights ... at least for me ...

... a variety ...

... of small moths ...

... is also present here ...

... in big ...

... numbers ...

... small snails ...

... are also numerous ...

... and so are the flowers ...

... this is ...

... a very ...

... colorful place in the first half of summer ...

... and many flowers ...

... attract ...

... many different ...

... pollinators ...

... with so many intertwined plants ...

... the flowers often ...

... come together in lovely combinations ...

... of shapes, textures, and colors ...

... there is a multitude of little details to discover ... like these minuscule beetles on the wild carrot flowers ...

... or a strange ...

... and beautiful spider ...

... among the vivid yellow flowers ...

... the spiders here ...

... are really ...

... varied ...

... many interesting species ...

... are hunting around here ...

... some of them are very small ...

... not easy to notice ...

... one of the most interesting insects that can regularly be found in this habitat ...

... is this beautiful mantis ... Empusa pennata ...

... here is on the fibrous leaf of the plant :D that is called Spanish broom in English ... I learned today ...

... ... it makes sense, the fibrous leaves look like a great material for brooms ...

( Enlargeable )

... this is another typical plant here ...

... and the one ...

... that attracts ...

... many ...

... insects ...

... there is always something cool to see ...

... on this plant ...

... like this stick insect...

... or a stick insect with the cricket, ad example ...

( Enlargeable )

... or this ... just another ordinary ant :D ... but ... there is a cool story here ... because very near ...

... there is another ant ...

... but ... if you look better ... you'll notice ...

... a strange anatomic detail on that very ant-like body... a long proboscis ... that no ant has...

... this is actually a bug ... with vary sophisticated mimicry ...

... the appearance is only one part of the cover ... she also walks and runs like ants ... if you don't look very, very good and up close ... this bug absolutely looks like an ant ...

...another minuscule bug ...

... this one is usually well hidden between the thorns ...

... a multitude of these black ones ... also small ... can also be found among the thorns ...

... with many ...

... small ...

... young ...

... grasshoppers ...

... while the large, adult ones ...

... are preferring other plants ...

... this beetle is collecting the seeds ...

... this ... a pretty big one ... with the long antennae ...

... is just resting ... I think ...

... a shiny beetle in a combination of olive green and violet ...

... another ... shinier... :D shiny beetle ...

... another cricket ... this one is munching the thick and meaty thorny leaf ...

... a small black cockroach ...

... a small black moth ...

... a small black fly ...

... a minuscule black Coleoptera ... in a strange ...

... and interesting ...

... flower ...

... on this photograph ... ants are shepherding the aphids ...on the fennel plant ...

... one evening I found these interesting eggs on one stem ...

... when I returned the next morning ... all the eggs were empty ... I don't know what came out of them ...

... a tiny hoverfly on the mugwort leaf ...

... a multitude of minuscule young spiders ...

... another cricket in the thorns ...

... and a few more ... to emphasize the fact that there are many crickets here ...

... yap ...

... a lot ...

... of those ...

... these little ...

... cicada relatives ...

... are also very common ...

... and also ...

... these ...

... moths ...

... and now ...

... with some thorns ...

... and flowers ...

... with the stick insect ...

... and a Spanish broom ... is time to end this colorful little post ... have a good day ... or night ... wherever on this great little planet you are ... as always in these posts on Steemit, all the photographs are my work... THE END

As I was strolling through the insect world here, I thought of hours spent with my children and granddaughter, reading fantasy stories. This blog could be an inspiration for one, or many of those. The insects as you reveal them have personalities, complexity.
A wonderful job, as usual.

:) I spend a lot of time watching these small invertebrates ... and there is a lot of action in their world ... hunting, mimicry, digging, building, communication, rituals ... a lot of surprising stories, combinations and survival strategies ... and is all at hand, is relatively easy to observe ... if you stay calm and don't make to much noise in their presence, they continue with their activities like nobody's watching them ... it's like watching a documentary

:)
One of the books that came to mind. I read this one over and over again to my granddaughter. 🐛 And there's a video. We watched that too:

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Slide show here:https://www.slideshare.net/samanthamorris211/the-very-hungry-caterpillar-7574597

:D The title reflects the caterpillar character perfectly ... they always look very hungry while eating ... hehehe I saw the whole story now, it has a happy and with the butterfly ... cool little story, a lot of counting, numbers learning and a bit of biology with the metamorphosis ... good combination

🐛🦋

🌞

:D I see only 3 little squares... must be something my computer can't read ... can you describe me please, what it is?

It was a caterpillar, a butterfly and a smiling sun. Can't get the sun to smile, but I've made a little picture of the three for you here:

Hey there, These are great so I gave you our medium-sized vote because I'd like to encourage more. However generally for SteemSTEM support, we do require a bit more academic information backed up by sources. Obviously this is up to you, but I thought I'd let you know! Great stuff

Thank you :) and thanks for the suggestion ... In time, when my English will be better, I will write more text to accompany the photographs.

Good job!
