When the air quality of air is imbalanced due to human activities or natural process than it is known as air pollution. I have written, “Air Pollution- Big cause for Human Death,” I think many steemians are amazed by this title but its true. Air pollution is very dangerous for human. There are many effects of air pollution on human beings.
Normally an average human being breathes about 16 kg of oxygen in 22,000 times a day. The fresh air should have 78% of nitrogen,20.95% oxygen, 0.93 argon, 0.03 carbon dioxide and other few gases. But due to human activities and some natural process air is polluted. And we are not able to breath fresh air. Some factors that cause air pollution are known as air pollutants.
Source
There are four air pollutants, they are:
- Oxides of Sulpher(Sox)
Oxides of Sulpher is emitted by the industries and power stations. - Oxides of Nitrogen (Nox)
Oxides of Nitrogen is emitted by Industries, Power stations, and vehicles. - Oxides of Carbon(Cox)
Oxide of carbon is emitted by vehicle and dust.
Some of these air pollutants directly enter into the fresh air and pollute it.
When fossil fuel is burned CO & CO2 will produce
2C + O2 2CO
C + O 2CO2
Secondary air pollutants also play a big role in air pollution. When there is a chemical reaction between two or more component, then it is known as secondary air pollution.
2SO2 + H2O 2SO3
SO3+ H2O H2SO4
2CO + O2 2CO2
CO2= H2O H2CO3
Top Sources of Air Pollution
Source
Mainly air is polluted by natural and artificial sources.
Natural sources
There are many natural causes which makes air polluted. Some of them are.’
- Forest Fire
- Volcanic Eruption
- Dust Storms
- The release of Organic Substances
Artifical sources
Artifical sources of air pollution also known as human-made sources of air pollution/. Some of the artificial sources are
- Industrial Exhausts
- Automobile Exhausts
- Particular Matter
- Pesticides
- Photochemical smog
- The release of CFCs and Ammonia
- Tobacco smoke
- The release of radioisotopes
Effects of Air Pollution
Some of the significant effects of air pollution are
- Ozone layer depletion is caused by Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) and nitrogen oxide.
- Air pollution also causes acid rain, when the oxide of sulfur, nitrogen, and carbon combine with water vapor at atmosphere.
- Benzopyrene is one of the major air pollutant, which can cause lungs cancer.
- Green House Effect.
- Poor visibility which causes the accident.
- Photochemical smoke affects our eyes and lungs, it also affects plants.
- A rate of photosynthesis is affected by air pollution.
- Radiation pollution will effect human beings. It can cause skin cancer, mutation, affect the fetus of pregnant women.
- Some major air pollutants and their effect
CO: Cause Headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, impaired brain function, and it can also cause death when it is 1% in air.
H2S: It’s responsible for eye irritation. Paralyze respiratory tract.
