It is now pretty clear that I have missed some of the episodes.

When I checked your example of a map using hue to represent some variable, I was thinking, once again, about a nasty way to hide the fact that we have a variable bin size. In other words, the map is kind of misleading as most won't pay attention to this little detail...

You are absolutely right, most maps are kind of misleading in a sense, as far as we don't pay attention to everything included in the map and mentioned on the map memo board. Hue is one of the most efficient visual variables though, due to the way the human sensory system works.
