This was a great read. I couldn't prevent myself from thinking about those genetic algorithms often used in computing. However we would have here a huge mutation probability instead. Is that right?

Yeah it is somewhat similar. Since directed evolution only focuses on a single gene, then I suppose it would be analogous only if only one component of an algorithm was allowed to change while keeping the other components constant.
This I unfortunately can't tell. I have never used genetic algorithms myself. Just witnessed crazy uses of them (with huge mutation probabilities which make very little sense in my naive opinion).
