Climate change is caused by both natural and man-made factors. It has a serious impact on the global environment. Some of these devastating impacts includes; Volcano, Landslide, Erosion, Flooding, Drought and Food insecurity.
Climate change's impact on agriculture is worthy of concern on a global level.
Menace of Environmental degradation occasioned by climate change has posed a serious bottleneck and devastating threat to sufficient food production among various parts of the world.
Landslides, Erosion, Flooding, Pollution amongst many other Environmental hazards have left farmlands barren and damaged to a high degree that farming seems practically impossible.
Climate change will worsen the living conditions of farmers, fishers and forests conservationists who are already left vulnerable by the effects of climate change.
Hunger and malnutrition will be on a higher side alongside poverty, diseases and social vices will be greatly influenced by the ills of this disaster.
Rural communities dependent on agriculture in a fragile environment will face an immediate risk of increased crop failure and loss of livestock.
Mostly at risk are people living along coasts, in floodplains, mountains, drylands, and the arctic. In general, poor people will be at risk of food insecurity due to loss of assets and lack of adequate insurance coverage.
Tackling hunger is a great challenge of our time as hunger has multiple dimensions, and causes ranging from deficiencies in macro and micro nutrients. Causes ranges from constraints on the supply of food of sufficient quantity and quality and lack of purchasing power to complex interactions of nutrition with sanitation and infectious diseases leading to poor health.
Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries are among the most climate sensitive sectors. Thus, their production processes be it for several purposes such as; food, fibre, livestock feed, beverage, energy or industrial use could be grossly affected by climate change.
Being interested in food security is modern and right
The world population keeps growing at a geometric progression
We have a responsibility in ensuring sustainable food supply
EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON AGRICULTURE
Climate change has a potential effect on food price, access to markets, poverty, unemployment and poor health status courtesy of unsafe drinking water or malnutrition.
Climate change can affect food utilization capacity through different ways. The direct effect of climate change is through decreasing productivity of plants that are rich in micronutrients or it alters the micronutrient contents of specific crops through flooding of the cropland.
Climate change can influence decisions of farmers on whether to cultivate or not crops with high nutritious value.
Climate change could also lead to extinction in species of both flora and fauna.
We ought to eat what we produce and produce what we eat
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS PROFFERED TO AMELIORATE THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
Despite the seemingly impossible measures to totally eradicate climate change at a go, there are adaptive and mitigative measures possible to reduce the impacts of climate change globally.
Safe agricultural practices (Afforestation, etc) applicable in all regions is a great way towards boosting food security.
A thorough understanding of vulnerabilities, governance and climate change will in the long term, afford people the opportunity to create ways and innovative ideas in tackling this issues without relying solely on the government.
Sustaining ecosystems, supporting early warning information systems are great efforts in ensuring that food systems at every level are more resilient to future climate variability and change.
