There's gonna be a ton of posts in the next few days about the meetup - and therefore about CMS as well - but it's basically a giant, multi layered, custom designed and built sensor capable of detecting some of the elementary particles resulting from the collision of two protons at super fast speeds.
Then computers, and eventually people, analyze what CMS detected and try to reconstruct the results of the collision backward in the hopes of finding new undiscovered particles - for instance, the Higgs Boson back in 2012
Others may come shoot me down for both providing a massively oversimplified, and therefore confusing conceptual example, as well as one from a "field" of forensic "science" that is total bullshit - but it's like the physics equivalent of blood splatter analysis or crime scene reproduction - except infinitely more complex and with an extraordinarily accurate end result.
