Stephen Shore - Photographer's weekly dedication by @otsouvalas #1

in #steemstem7 years ago

Hello steemians !

My name is Odysseas Tsouvalas and I am photographer.
As you already know, my life is photography, and photography is my life.

I decided to start an weekly post event, which every week I will dedicate a photographer, new or old, small or big.
(spoiler) I will make a second run too, every 10 days, with new photographers from #photography. If you are the chosen one, there will be a winning price of SBD or steem. But this is for another post.

Let's not lose further time.

Our first dedication is Stephen Shore

The man who everyone hated because
his photographs were not in black & white.

Stephen Shore

Stephen Shore was a photographic miracle. At age of six, his uncle gave him a photographic darkroom kit. And 3 years later when he was nine, he began to use a 35mm film camera and then he started his first steps as color photographer.
His greatest influence was the Walker Evan's book "American Photographs" and he was just ten years old. Four years later he presented his photographs to Edward Steinchen and this was his first steps as photographer. He sold 3 photographs to Edward who was then curator of photography at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
His first steps grown faster when Shore met Andy Warhol and he was only seventeen. He began to frequent Warhol's studio "The Factory", photographing Warhol and many creative people that surrounded him.
Few years later (1971, at age of 24), he became the second living photographer who had a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

And then, he started his journal making "on the road" photographs with many landscapes from his trips. In 1972, he made a trip from Manhattan to Amarillo and this was what made him to provoke his interest in color photography. He used many type of cameras (like his first 35mm hand-held, 4x5" and 8x10" view camera).
Ten years passed. Ten years with a lot of photographic work, exhibitions and an endowment from National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for further work (year 1974). Ten years after his first photographic trip, he published his book "Uncommon Places", which was a bible for the new color photographers.
This happened because alongside William Eggleston, his work proved that a color photograph can have a place as a work of art beside a painting, or a black and white photograph. Many notable photographers (Nan Goldin, Martin Parr, Thomas Struth, Andreas Gursky) have acknowledged his influence on their work too.

This was the brand start of publications and book travel produced by Shore. We can say that he is the father of colorful photographic education.
Here is a video with Stephen Shore "at the museum" when he visits an in-progress installation of his first full career survey exhibition.
