I'm no stranger to using cutting-edge technology. Many athletes like Tiger Woods have had their injuries treated with Platelet Rich Plasma to speed up the healing process.
What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
It is derived from your blood. Your blood is mostly plasma with red cells, white cells, and platelets. You might be familiar with platelets being the reason your blood clots, but did you know that your platelets also contain proteins that are called growth factors. It is the growth factors in the platelets that are the key, as they are very important in healing.
The following is the process involved with obtaining a concentration of Platelet Rich Plasma. All pictures are my own.
The whole blood needs to be transfered to a sterile bottle that is designed for the centrifuge machine and also allows for maximum plasma removal. To balance the whole blood while in the centrifuge, it must be weighed, and an equal weight of saline is placed in another bottle.
After the centrifuge, the plasma is clearly separated from the red blood cells (left picture). Next the plasma, (right picture) which contains the platelets, must be extracted, leaving the red blood cells to be discarded.
This gif shows that you stop extracting when you see red blood cells in the tube.
The plasma only is now transfered into a bottle that is not only designed for the centrifuge but for maximum removal of Platelet Rich Plasma. Once again the centrifuge is used on the plasma only. This separates the Platelet POOR Plasma (on top) and the Platelet RICH Plasma (on the bottom). The Platelet POOR Plasma is extracted to the level shown on the far right.
This gif shows the process to extract the Platelet Rich Plasma.
The left picture shows the trace amount of red blood cells that adhered to the bottom. The right picture shows the final products - One large syringe of Platelet Poor Plasma and 2 1/4 syringes of Platelet Rich Plasma.
The Platelet Rich Plasma is then injected to the injured area. There are many applications such as for ligaments, tendons, wound healing to name a few, but this whole process is dependant upon your health. If you have healthy blood, you should have great results.

Very out of this world information @steem-samiam. Thanks for sharing.
Aww, thank you very much :)
I thought/heard they heated the specimen before injecting it to activate these "growth factors"
No, they don't heat anything, but very interesting. The concept, in a nutshell, is to get a concentration of the "growth factor" platelets and re-inject them asap with a 6-hour deadline. Thanks for your comments, always appreciated.

Interesting article. There seem to have been a lot of interesting medical developments lately, too.
Now, if they can just come up with a way to fix my eyes...

Amazing post dear. Loved reading it. Many thanks for sharing. Upvoted as always. Regards Nainaz
Thanks so much for looking at my post :)
O man I got light headed looking at that. My arms started to tingle.
lol, I hear you! I'm the kind of person that needs to be topped up at ALL times and that was a lot of blood that was sucked out of me.
A very didactic post. I liked that you teach the procedure of separation of the different blood components.
Wow, that's such a huge compliment :) Thanks
i must say that ive been educated here by your wonderful post.
Thanks so much!
That is exactly how they’re preparing lattes in my local coffee shop.
Omg, you ARE the best!! I'll be giggling all day now :) Thanks for checking out my post!!
Im not a fan of doctors or needles but this very interesting to say the least. What is the cost on a procedure like this? Thats also a significant factor IMO.
Thanks for sharing the information and possibility. Up voted.
Me neither!!! This was my natural path doctor that did the procedure and in Canada, so I'm very sure it was more expensive than in the USA (even vets do it in Florida) This cost me $800 Cdn and would highly recommend as it was shocking the overnight healing.
WOW!
Cool, all things considered for doctor therapy $800 is not to bad especially if it works that well!
Really nice to know!
You work in a lab or you got the opportunity to visit one such lab?
In any case really awesome to see how platelets are separated from the blood!
So glad you enjoyed. I had my natural path doc do the PRP on myself :)
Information is the key, that's for your sight
Informative, love the step by step illustration and the pictures that accompanied it, I feel well equipped and informed to carry out the procedure
Good information to know. Thank you for sharing this.
Wow thanks for the inside look at how all this works. I knew they did this, but have
Oh wow! I knew about this (being a nurse), but it is still different seeing from pictures.
This is a great idea, while your blood is still healthy. How much does this typically cost?
I did it in Canada, so I'm sure that it is more expensive than it would be in Thailand or even the USA. I paid $800 Cdn.
Oh yeah, that is really expensive. I could ask here when I visit Bangkok. I am sure it is worth it though!
Great information and a well constructed article, including photos and GIFs!
It made me wonder if the platelet therapy for tendons and ligament is far enough in the process to heal old ripped up one? Any idea?
Thanks again for another really good article! Namaste :)
Yes, it will help immensely...as long as you have good blood which I have no doubt that you do because of your age and in good shape (I don't think you smoke either). Tendons and especially ligaments take FOREVER to heal, so that is why many athletes immediately get PRP done. Thanks so much for the compliments :)
Wow! this is taking my breath away and gives me hope that, someday, maybe, I'll be able to walk the way I used to, climb mountains and dance with life...
Thank you so very much, namaste :)
Interesting stuff. I would always seek to find a non intrusive alternative however.
Earthing sheets for example can vastly increase healing time & maintain optimum body functionaity. Yet few people even know what an earthing sheet is. They are just starting to use them now in the field of sports.
I have slept on one for many years.
I've never heard of the earthing sheets. Thanks, I'll check into it!!
Very interesting... I wonder how long it takes to get from point A to point B, though? I presume this is more to apply to longer term healing?
If you have good blood (which I do) the healing for me was incredible...overnight vast improvement. It was a wow.
