SteemSTEM Distilled #17

in #steemstem7 years ago (edited)

Welcome to the 17th issue of SteemSTEM Distilled, a curation effort by the members of the @steemstem team.

SteemSTEM is a community driven project which seeks to promote well-written and informative Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics posts on Steemit. The project involves curating STEM-related posts through upvoting, resteeming, offering constructive feedback, supporting scientific contests, and other related activities.

For more details click here and here for information of what it means to be part of steemSTEM.

Our team scours the platform for original and quality content. After working through thousands (literally!) of STEM-related posts and upvoting more than 200 that we deemed to be worthy, we proudly present you our top 7 handpicked choices:

Monday - Geospatial Big Data: The Magic of Maps and Money

Big data is very important today on many different aspect. But what can we exactly do with data. @edumurphy is letting us know.

Tuesday - Becoming undead - How zombie cells make you older

Zombies do exist, at least in biology. Cells known as senescent cells are a class of cells that do not divide, but that do not die as well. Zombie cells in short. More about that is detailed by @aboutcoolscience.

Wednesday - Trehalose, a common food additive, may have fueled worldwide Clostridium difficile outbreaks

Want to know about a special sugar, this post of @tking77798 is for you. The author details what trehalose is and how it could potentially facilitate outbreaks.

Thursday - #11 IQ overload: Wolfgang Pauli

All you wanted to know about the life of Wolfgang Pauli is detailed in this post of @jakipatryk who manage a series about known scientists of the last century.

Friday - Journal of Unpublished Results – A case for the validity of scientific research (Part II)

Check out what beautiful things @replichara does in his lab, experimenting with carcinogenic genes. Follow him step by step and watch him "disarm" those evil cells!

Saturday - How are traits inherited across generations?

From albinism, peas, to incest, this post by @hadji is quite the educational trip on genetics and inheritance. Just how are traits passed on to future generations anyhow? Well, take a dive into this post and you just might learn the answer.

Sunday - Super Bugs - What is antibiotic resistance and how we are fighting it

The discovery of antibiotics was one of immense importance, one which has allowed the human race to fluorish to new heights. However, bacteria were not going to go down with out a fight, and some have developed resistances to our chosen antibiotic compounds. Here @tfcoates breaks down what it means to be one of these 'super bugs' and what we intend to do to fight them back.

A few words about the nomination process

For the sake of transparency we feel we need to clarify how our nomination process works; each issue is compiled by certain members of the SteemSTEM community. This week's editorial team was comprised of @justtryme90, @lemouth and @ruth-girl.

The editorial team chooses their favorite posts for the week and each issue is the result of their joined effort. In order to keep the process fair, posts written by the editorial team are excluded from the nomination process.

Don't be discouraged if you didn't make it on this issue. The competition is harsh and there is always a next time :) In the meantime, you may wish to check these guidelines for extra tips on how your writing can be more effective.

Authors That Received a Curie Upvote by the SteemSTEM Team

In the same spirit of being transparent about our actions that are now supported by @curie, we will release every week a list of authors who have caught the attention of the @steemstem curation team.

If you want to discuss this with us, please do not hesitate to join the steemSTEM channel on the Steemit chat or to follow our curation trail on Streemian. If you are not on Streemian, we have a plan B through a homemade voting bot. You can contact us on the chat in order to be added to its trail.

Thank you so much guys! It's an amazing feeling when your post is chosen by one of the most intelligent and awesome group of people here on Steemit. More power to you all! Thanks again :D

You are welcome! Thanks for your nice contributions to the STEM content on the platform!

I am very glad to see the list of rewarded users increasing more and more. New records are getting made every other week, at the moment. It is cool to see that the rewards are shared with more and more people, and that conversely more and more people are getting engaged within our steemsTEM community :)

And of course, congratulations to all winners! :D

Thank you for your work and your support! You make the difference for so many users!

I second that thought.

It's crazy to see how much the need for SteemSTEM is proven by this post.
The fact that I have not run into even a single one of these great topics has to do with the trending page presenting mostly crypto related stuff. I seriously feel a bit warmer after viewing this one. Will visit each every one of the upvoted users the coming week in order to show some gratitude.
Not that my vote can be of any significance, I think my voice can.

t.

That's right. I had only seen the trehalose article. Good job, @steemstem !

You can check the steemstem-trending page to get those posts, here. This is how to get to all the posts we vote quickly :)

Thank you for the support steemSTEM. We are grateful for the continuous support to the STEM community especially the Nigerian community.

And the Nigerian community should be thankful to stemng as well :)

Thanks for featuring my article! There is a lot of solid competition these days so it feels like an accomplishment to make the list. Congrats to everyone else who contributed last week.

We are totally committed to STEM thanks to all who make this community grow weekly :)

And thanks also to you for the (future) development of our Spanish branch :)

Thanks for your good words :D

Damn it, I'm sinking down the alphabetical list at the end of the post. Gotta change my username to @---111alexander.alexis

Then, next week I will reverse the list :D

very useful and what you publish is very good for my personal knowledge, hopefully always keep motivation bro

Thanks for your comment. Note that it is not really 'us' who publish things, but more the people we refer to. Do not hesitate to visit their blog. Also, we are not a 'bro' but a full team of people :)

Yeah bro always succes to you

Thanks for the inclusion! Part 2 will be coming soon, I promise. If my supervisor ever lets me out of the hospital on time :p

Aaah those supervisors :D

Have you guys ever discussed doing a curation post by scientific topic? The one that springs to mind would be just STEM, of course- a Science post, a Technology post, etc. Alternatively, since Steemstem seems so heavily dominated by science posts over the other three, you could do it with the different sciences- physics, chemistry, biology, etc. (I had this idea a while ago, but it felt self-serving proposing it when I was one of the only people blogging about geology- but there are several other excellent geology bloggers on here now.)

I think that the current strategy you guys are using- the best post from each day strategy- is better overall, but this might be fun do do as a bonus post every now and then.

I think for the moment, the flow is not there yet. But in the future, this may be something we could have in mind. Thanks for your suggestion :)

looking at these pictures,It reminds me of my middle school days,my interesting chemistry experiments。

What do the Chinese characters (is it Chinese?) mean? ;)

it means I am smiling like a child of 6000 years old。
this is a Ancient Chinese sculpture。^_^

The sculpture is super cool, actually :)

Again I would like to express my sincere gratitude to this great community. The light that stemSTEM has brought shall keep shining brighter.
God bless steemSTEM

Thanks @samminator!

It's an honour sir

Impressive results of the STEM community.

By the way, SteemIt has just entered top 500 in USA!
Time to grow!

We are already growing! Please wait for distilled-18 :)

Thanks steemstem for always being there 😁.

You are welcome! Thanks to you for your contributions!

Looking forward to it. @steemstem curation is a powerful and exciting incentive especially within the population most attracted to Steemit in the first place.

Very excited to see how far this can go.

PS
OMG I WAS MENTIONED IN @steemstem DIGEST ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME?!!!!

We will go to the moon, won't we? :D

Oh, we have not yet BEGUN to moon 💪🚀🌕😀

Mars is actually fancier :D

Congrats to all the featured authors! Keep it up guys :)

Thanks for congratulating them :)

Yeah no problem. I hope I could get featured again :D

Maybe. The future will tell :)

steemstem Rocks!!! \m/

Yes we do :D

I'm glad that I can be a part of this amazing initiative :)

And we are glad to have you :)

I only found @steemsem a few days ago and I wish I found them earlier, because I've been posting about technology and science since I started on steem and my posts weren't going anywhere.

Thank you @steemstem for your great work and for upvoting my previous post, giving me a little extra motivation to continue writing technology posts on steem!

Thanks for your nice comment. We are doing our best to find the good content related to STEM fields. However, due to the massive amount of posts, it is easy for us to miss some. This is why the use of the steemstem tag is recommended :)

Interesting topic! I think @steemstem become one of reference of science and technology topic on Steemit. Good job! :) b

That is the goal, indeed ^^

Thank God, I was curated this week. Just need to strive to have my post featured on distilled maybe #18 or #19.....

Good job, steemstem ...

With time and efforts, everything pays! :D

Glad I found you guys. You have another follower. 💪

As said in another comment, do you really think people will visit your blog if you post the very same generic comment to many posts? This is not really how it works around here...

Nice sharing.your topic is awesome

Great idea
This kind of community
Makes amazing results by motivating,

How to participate to get the revenue?

I recommend to read this post where everything is explained. In particular that revenues are by far not the central point that matters. Please check also the various links in this post.

glad to see this..it will really encourage the quality content writer to invest their time in steemit even more !

At least for now it works, since we are growing in size :)

good post thank you

you are welcome.

I like sains

Do you mind explaining what are sains? I don't know that word :D

I'm sorry, i mean scientists 😀

Ah ok. We do like them as well :)

Your article is very nice to me.
If your sincere cooperation, we will be happy.
Your cooperation is very necessary to me.
In anticipation.

Our goal is not about cooperation. I recommend you to read this post to get a better idea about what we are after and what we support. Thanks in advance!

thank you for your support this will bring more confidence to steemit users

You are welcome. As I said in another comment, it is a matter of developing a community. It is kind of connected to confidence, but ti goes beyond that.

I am very happy to see you sharing post..it will truly empower the quality substance essayist to put their opportunity in steemit considerably more !

I don't think we shared any of your post (yet?). I recommend you the reading of this post so that you could get a better vision of our goal here and what we are after.

Excellent! Did you ever consider that music is STEM? Read my recent blog post about that (it's short!). Link: https://steemit.com/music/@monadnock/music-is-stem
Thanks! More to come!

Music could be STEM. It depends how it is presented.

How about if it is presented as outlined/suggested in my recent blog post? https://steemit.com/music/@monadnock/music-is-stem

We will have a look.

Wow. Nice information thanks for share

Well, I am wondering what you expect by posting similar comments of this sort to plenty of posts around here? This is not the best way to engage the community.

I LOVE THE POST.

Posting the very same comment to many posts is not how things work around here, in general...

I think your Post is for a big group of people very helpful!
Thx for making this Website for us!
Upvote when your in my opinion @alokkamboj

We are trying to help as many steemians as possible (in the STEM field) so that they can join, meet, discuss and form a community. This is the real help we provide.

Very nice topic!

Indeed. I recommend the reading of the 7 advertised posts too :)

Interesting. I want to be part of your group could anyone will tell me how?

This is easy. It is sufficient to join us on the steemit chat or on discord. We will be waiting for you :)

Yes sir I will just click the discord then it will direct there?

Normally yes. But it seems you managed :)

Finally I became part of your discord chat sir. thank you for welcoming me. looks like I finally found a group which my interests fit in.

Nice post
Thanks

this reminds me of my college years. writing research papers, presenting our hypothesis, different experiments on molecular biology and microbiology as well as our parasitology. i'll read the guideline and i'll try to make an entry and see if i have what it takes. this is very challenging. thank you for this post. :)

It is challenging, but it is worthy. Both for you and the community! Please give it a try an you will see! :)

i will sir @lemouth :)
thanks and have a great day ahead!

thank you Steemstem, like that science and knowlegde will be shared and we will learn more and more

Keep your initiative very good

Thanks for the support @steemstem !. For my part, I will continue working very hard to publish quality content. Congratulations to all!. Regards!.
