SteemSTEM Distilled #20

in #steemstem7 years ago (edited)

Welcome to the 20th issue of SteemSTEM Distilled, a curation effort by the members of the @steemstem team.

SteemSTEM is a community driven project which seeks to promote well-written and informative Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics posts on Steemit. The project involves curating STEM-related posts through upvoting, resteeming, offering constructive feedback, supporting scientific contests, and other related activities.

For more details, a recent update on the steemSTEM can be found here, and a not so recent one there. Moreover, if you ask yourself about what it means to be part of steemSTEM, please check here.

Our team scours the platform for original and quality content.

After working through thousands (literally!) of STEM-related posts and upvoting more than 150 that we deemed to be worthy, we proudly present you our top 8 handpicked choices for this Thursday-Sunday period.

The Geology of the Oldest Mountains in the World: Vol. 1 - Appalachian Mountains

The United States, among many things, is known for it's areas of natural splendor. Along these lines we find the Applachian mountains, filled with a treasure trove of parks and beautiful geological features. Take a hike through this great post by @keephy and perhaps you will find an appreciation for what this old mountain range has to offer.

Hypoglycemia | Risk Factor for People with Diabetes| Deep look

Diabetes is becoming ever more common in our modern, sedentary world. One complication faced by people with this disease is called Hypoglycemia. Take a deep dive with @juandiaz89 into what this entails, you just might learn something that could help you improve your life, or the life of someone you know.

The Amateur Mycologist - Another Tree Killing Fungus To Look Out For - Likely Armillaria Species Infecting My Favorite Trees

Steemit's resident amateur mycologist @dber continues to dazzle with his research on various species of mushrooms, self shot images, and rigorous investigaton into the literature to provide us with entertaining, interesting and educational blogs on these interesting organisms! Todays post is no exception! Check it out!

Reliable information or manipulative content? Spot the difference!

The internet is filled with lies, information passed off as fact, but that has no basis in reality. One of the biggest challenges WE (and that means all of us) will face in the future is how to sort fact from fiction, truth from bullshit, science from pseudoscience. Take some time and read through this post where @irime goes through some examples of the use of logical fallacies to drive false information into our brains. We need to train our selves to think better, to employ logic, to be more rational, if we are to navigate our way through the confusing information being shot at us from all directions.

How can our heart keep beating on it's own, over and over till we die - Understanding Electrical Activity of the Heart

How does the human heart work? Do you know? Why does it beat? Can yours beat all on its own, even if its not inside your body? Learn the answers to these questions (and more!) in this great post by @simplifylife

COMETS - A Brief Primer

Comets are more than just something to see streaking brightly through the night sky! In fact they may hold the keys to unlocking more of the mysteries of the universe! Learn more about comets, and what the components are that we see as they travel by in this great piece by @terrylovejoy.

The History of the Earth | Let's See Our Past

The rocks are the key to understand how old our good old planet is. @mikekenlytungal browses history, and by highlighting a bunch of great scientists, the author shows us how we manage to show that Earth is 4 billions year old. A good insight on dating with the different elements that can be found under Earth's crust.

Audio compression (simplified)

Audio compression can be something complicated to understand. @thelonelydev however helps us with a simplified article detailing the two different types of compression (lossy and lossless), all of this illustrated with nice examples emphasizing the differences.

A few words about the nomination process

For the sake of transparency we feel we need to clarify how our nomination process works; each issue is compiled by certain members of the SteemSTEM community. This week's editorial team was comprised of @justtryme90 and @lemouth.

The editorial team chooses their favorite posts for the week and each issue is the result of their joined effort. In order to keep the process fair, posts written by the editorial team are excluded from the nomination process.

Don't be discouraged if you didn't make it on this issue. The competition is harsh and there is always a next time :) In the meantime, you may wish to check these guidelines for extra tips on how your writing can be more effective.

Authors That Received a Curie Upvote by the SteemSTEM Team

In the same spirit of being transparent about our actions that are now supported by @curie, we will release every week a list of authors who have caught the attention of the @steemstem curation team.

If you want to discuss this with us, please do not hesitate to join the steemSTEM channel on the Steemit chat or to follow our curation trail on Streemian. If you are not on Streemian, we have a plan B through a homemade voting bot. You can contact us on the chat in order to be added to its trail.

From January 14 to January 20, we rewarded 164 different authors who have written a total of 251 different articles. The authors who received both a @steemstem and a @curie vote that week are:

@abigail-dantes, @ajpacheco1610, @alexander.alexis, @alexbeyman, @alexs1320, @alpharay, @altherion, @amavi, @amity123, @angelggomz, @anibalmdz, @arrjey, @asbonclz, @atheneav, @azulear, @bape682, @biomanu, @biw, @carlgbush, @chandy18, @chotho, @churchboy, @clausewitz, @cpufronz, @crazy-daisy, @cuarzo05, @daylen, @dber, @dedicatedguy, @dexterdev, @djredimi2, @dkmathstats, @doctorcro, @donkeykong9000, @drifter1, @drkomoo, @dysfunctional, @ejrangel, @elith, @ememovic, @enzor, @erh.germany, @eugin, @eurogee, @fancybrothers, @filotasriza3, @freddbrito, @fredrikaa, @futurmen, @gianluccio, @giovaabbatichio, @gmaktub, @grider123, @gtan, @hadji, @hellofuture, @henrychidiebere, @highonthehog, @hjashnsaz, @ideas-abstractas, @irime, @issavets, @ixindamix, @jajdgenius, @jakipatryk, @jamhuery, @jefpatat, @jepper, @johan794, @jonelq, @jorge150785, @joseg, @jringo, @juanjdiaz89, @kaiyoko, @katerinaramm, @kaydee, @keephy, @kenadis, @kharrazi, @ksolymosi, @leczy, @lesshorrible, @louic, @louielowa, @loular, @loveisintheair, @lucastar, @markos86, @marverick984, @maurelvys, @mcw, @meghana123, @mihaitecnology, @mike11, @mikekenlytungal, @mirkon86, @mountain.phil28, @mountainwashere, @munawar1235, @muphy, @mystifact, @neyi24, @noble-noah, @nonationnoborder, @odiaprecious, @oluwabori, @oscarcc89, @osita21, @otsouvalas, @pacheco05, @pangoli, @pario, @pearlumie, @pisolutionsmru, @ponmile, @preciousdave, @proteus-h, @punjolife, @rabo, @reviewit, @rharphelle, @rickie, @rickyxp, @rionpistorius, @rnunez09, @robertoromero, @rocking-dave, @rossanavictora, @rscalabrini, @rupamxanu, @samminator, @samve, @sarabelardo, @sc-steemit, @sciencegeek, @scisteem, @sco, @setapart, @simplifylife, @siniy, @soleil-research, @stanleyc-md, @sustainablyyours, @svemirac, @sweetestglo-eu, @tarazkp, @techblogger, @techlife, @tensor, @terrylovejoy, @tfcoates, @thatsweeneyguy, @thedrewtrott, @thelonelydev, @therockman, @thinkingmind, @tkappa, @tsoldovieri, @ugonma, @valchiz, @valth, @wilians, @xtrex, @zoneboy

Oh my god!! You know how when you're a kid you dream of going to the moon someday, touch the starts etc. but they never really happen most of the time, when I started out on steemit, I have always dreamt of making it into the steemstem distilled!! I can't thank the judges enough for choosing my post for this week's edition!! This has definitely set the bar really high for me and I will try my best to keep creating content that you guys will enjoy.

Once again, thank you all so much!!

With time and efforts, everything becomes possible :)

Aye aye captain!! Agreed!! :D

You wrote a great post! Keep it up!

Will do my best :D

Congrats @simplifylife. I'll be following your content.

Cool my comet article is there! Thanks guys !

Good content deserves appreciation :)

Thank you very much @justtryme90 @lemouth to all of you and to the community, I appreciate your help that they have given me to improve little by little.

You are welcome! It is a pleasure for us to help where we can :)

Congratulations to all the winners!

I want to emphasize that with our bi-weekly distilled, we can shed light on 14 posts from 14 authors. This may sound a large number, but this is actually a selection of 14 out of 321 for last week :)

Yep, competition is fierce :D

" we cam she light "

what?

Nothing nothing... :p

' we cam she light' 😂

The only competition is/should be with ourselves!
Congratulations to everyone! It takes dedication, love and time both to curate and of course to explore/discover the world (or beyond it)
💙 Thank You!

There is indeed no competition, but I was meaning, choosing the featured posts... is a pain! Really :D

It sounds like one heck of a challenge having to choose 14 posts among 321. Thanks for your efforts and the work of the rest of the curators.

agree! "Congratulations to the featured authors" makes more sense.

Ok I pass :D

Awesome job here. The sheer number of upvotes attests to a lot of work done in just one week. Thanks.

You are welcome!

Thanks @lemouth. I will continue working hard!
Regards!.

Excellent posts. Especially liked the one about how scepticism and critical thinking in the face of ever taller mountains of misinformation are increasingly important in our day and age. Will have to check out the rest too :)

Don't hesitate to double check (and upvote these guys, if not done already) :D

Another beautiful collection! Thanks steemSTEM team for all the curation work, and to contributors for the wonderful posts!

Inspired by reggaemuffin's post earlier today, and while I don't have anywhere near 10k SP to spare LOL, yet I've sent @steemstem account a small contribution as some sort of a thank you for the support you are giving to quality STEM content :)

Keep rockin' you guys!

Thanks a lot for your contribution! It is very generous from you. Any contribution is more than welcome, no matter what it is :)

Thanks for the mention, I would have never expected this haha :) And also congratulations to the other winners and good luck other authors on the next Distilled!

Our pleasure! We liked reading your post :)

Awesome articles this week! Thanks for everything you guys do. In particular I hadn't noticed the one on the Appalachians previously, but after seeing it here have found it's a great read! Being from the west coast I had no idea that these mountains were so interesting.

I'm glad you enjoyed the article! The Appalachians are a truly wonderful place. I hope you get to see them sometime soon! I'll be writing more about this region in the near future so stay tuned!

Going there may be as hard as for me, European. Same distance, somehow :D

It would appear we have similar problems. I'm trying to get over to Europe to scope out more geological hotspots there.

@steemstem keep up the good work. You guys are amazing 😁😀

Congratulations to all the authors. My sincere appreciation goes to the entire management of SteemSTEM for helping to bring out the best in us.
Daalu nu rienne (In my native language)

Thanks a lot @samminator. Time to learn some Nigerian, I guess :D

I'd be honoured to teach you :D

wow, congratulations to all the winners and I must commend all the steemstem curators for their awesome work.
I know one day, I'll make it to that list.

I am pretty convinced of it :D

Great initiative, congratulations. I like that there is a place for technical knowledge in this community.
Congratulations to the winners.
And hoping to be useful in my publications about transport and heat transfer phenomena

This definitely fits our guidelines. Let's see :)

I must say that this is a fantastic project and a very helpful group!

Thanks a LOT, I am honored :)

You are welcome!

Truly the competition is really strong, reading each weekly post has been a challenge to give the community the best.

It is tough but we are happy to do it! We believe in what we do here!

That is why i am proud to be a member because not only from my post but from other post.

Congratulations to the winners and kudos to @Lemouth and @justtryme90, your motivation and encouragement can never be quantified. Keep it up guys!

Thanks for your encouragement. It is really cool to see them originating from the community to us :D

I just saw I was featured in the last two distilled posts - thanks guys!

You are a rock star man :D

Yor this pic is most beter hahahahU5dthhWhEnA6xZCDo4upgCbBS1GsT4v.gif

Eum the very inspire beginners who like me...

Dear @steamstem your initiative is so wonderful. I enjoy this distilled series so much. For me this is better than Discovery channel, because you can interact with the science master directly, ask him questions or afford somehow. Your distilled initiative is like Old scientific Magazine or better say Almanac. You will ask why old? Old in the meaning of non-spoiled yet.
Following you guys with big pleasure and am really proud to be part of Great Community!
