The Sharp Mathematics Contest #2

Stop Press!

Are your eyes sharp enough to observe?

Are your ears sharp enough to listen for flat tones?

Can you handle the risk with a good Sharpe Ratio?

Is your mind as sharp as a knife?

This is the 2nd Sharp Mathematics Contest.

The previous installation of the contest was actually pretty tough, involving some really advanced undergraduate / masters level mathematics, but the two brave contestants didn't know it, while the rest of the readers shied away from participating. With only two participants, the 3rd prize was left unclaimed. "Discretion is the better part of valour", they say?

OK, this time 'round, I am going to make it easier. I want to give away all the prizes! You just need to read and understand my post on visualising the division of fractions. Keep a sharp lookout for my posts for the next few days, as I might just drop some hints.

Prizes

The prizes, from my own Steem wallet, are:-

 1st Prize: 5 SBD
 2nd Prize: 3 SBD
 3rd Prize: 2 SBD

If I get sponsors, then the prizes may be increased. If you know a rich uncle / daddy, or maybe some whale Steemit users who want to help out, please reply to this post, or contact moi at [email protected].

So now ... are you game enough?

Are you ready for the challenge?

Here goes ...

The Challenge

SharpMathContest -- 01.png

Criteria

I will be judging the entries for the competition based on the following criteria:-
(1) correctness of the answer
(2) explanation of the answer, especially the concepts
These are the main criteria. If necessary, as tie-breaker, I'll use the "quality of the graphics" as an additional criterion.

How to Join the Competition

To participate in this competiton, you must do all of the following:-
(1) upvote this post
(2) resteem this post
(3) follow me @tradersharpe
(4) write your own post on Steemit
(5) reply below to this post with a link to your post

For your diagrams, you may just draw on a piece of paper, and take a photo with your mobile phone. I recommend using CamScanner (or other app) that can clean up and make perspective corrections, so that it looks very nice and rectangular. Alternatively, you may use some drawing software to do the diagrams. There are plenty of these around.

Deadline

Please submit your entry to this contest at or before 23:59 Singapore time, Sunday, 15th October 2017.

All the best!

Good job! Thanks for joining in.

Hi @tradersharpe,
I was going to sit this one out, give someone else a chance to win, but it seems that no one wants to think for two minutes to claim some lovely SBD, so here is my entry:

cheers!

Hmmmm, @tradersharpe, very intriguing challenge. I've done the first three requirements above. Now to think about it awhile. I am terrible at math, and I struggle with understanding this whole concept. I always have. But maybe forcing myself to solve this challenge will help me grasp it better. Cheers, and I hope to come up with an entry post for you.

You should be able to do part (a) after reading my post https://steemit.com/steemstem/@tradersharpe/visualising-the-division-of-fractions

as for part (b) and (c) ... look out for some hints in the next few days ...

Thanks, @tradersharpe. I have already read the article. It was very helpful. And I will be watching for your hints! Cheers!

Unfortunately, @tradersharpe, I was not able to complete this contest before the deadline. I will have to try another one.
