One of the tragedies of 9/11 that does not get talked about is how it caused the Deep State to become monolithic. Before the consolidation of our intelligence apparatus, the individual parts served as checks against one another. Now, they are all the same arm (mostly). That should disturb economists and other people who study incentives. Now the incentives are aligned so people in the FBI, NSA, and CIA all must work together. It is good in some ways. It is very bad, even evil, in others, especially because independent perspectives are more likely to be eliminated from discussions.
