Cruise control is indeed very helpful when you have to drive for longer periods of time. The best new development of cruise control is acc (=adaptive cruise control) which fixes some of the issues you mentioned.
However, the more things the car does by itself the more people tend to get distracted very easily. It's about time to get fully self-driving cars!
