The title says it all. Stop adding pointless categories just to get more views. It's becoming even more difficult to browse categories due to being filled with shit that doesn't fit.
Dan has warned about this once and abusers should be treated as such.
is this already a meme on the hashtag ;)?
lol i just threw it together...meme-slap the offenders XD
That's funny.
lol
I agree. If it is about steem/steemit, then tag with steem/steemit. If it is not, then don't use those tags.
Listen well or feel the Bern.
I'm also pretty tired of everyone and their brother using the #steemit tag just to use it. I guess they think that if they are posting on Steemit that they get to use #steemit.
One of the things I've noticed when making threads is there just aren't' enough categories. People lump stuff into multiple other categories where they don't belong because where they do belong isn't in the list of categories. Sure you can put your post in that category but then after the first 15-30 minutes no one will find it. There really needs to be more categories and better organization of them. Maybe a category/subcategory/sub-subcategory system.
If you add a tag that isn't created, it's auto-generated ...
I hardly see why people are even taking steemit as a tag , it's not as if they are getting any kind of exposure out of it with the hundreds of posts flowing every hours using it.
@complexring, the problem is that people aren't creating or viewing lesser known tags. It's a vicious cycle. People want to be heard, so they post in a trending tag, and encourage behavior that is damaging to Steemit. Instead of posting and curating what we like, users hop on the bandwagon.
I've added many tags and they never show up on the list. The other day I did one in games, BSG, and I think simulator but those aren't on the list even now. I've also noticed that tags that used to be in the list aren't there anymore. Steemthought is no longer there and I've put stuff in it when it was.
You might used trending pages in simulator. But there are no trending in that category.
You should check the new posts like this:
https://steemit.com/created/simulator
https://steemit.com/created/bsg
I have just discovered the tags are case sensitive. If you try it with BSG it shows nothing.
I think it will be much easier in the future, but now we only have this.
I might be able to find a post that way but no one else even knows to look for it because they aren't on the category list.
What if a post relates to the topic of steemit partially? I try not to use it honestly but sometimes it feel appropriate due the the nature of the points being portrayed, no? But all in all I agree, I am sick of everything being tagged #steemit just cause... also what do you think about things like #thedashguy and/or #craigrant etc? Should these be deemed okay or annoying?
I would like to know the answer too. Sometimes the content of post is partially related like if I include some steemit facts in my post and 2-5 lines are about steemit, then is it a violation to use steemit tag? I don't think so. Hashtags are always connected with the content we have.
MY 2 Cents, literally.
A. "suspend" or deactivate that hashtag for a while
b. everyone including whales should try to ignore those posts
c. I think, in time, people will diversify there posts as other hash/categories grow or are added and gain in popularity. Because ultimately, that is what everyone is looking for, can't blame the Players @berniesanders Gotta blame the Game. And yes I am guilty , I admit. And I will not use that tag any longer unless relevant.
full $teem ahead!
@streetstyle
Understood. Won't be doing it anymore.
I had been adding it to mine simply because I noticed pretty much everyone else was as well.
My thinking was "Well, it's ON Steemit, so this works, right?"
Relevancy only from here forward. ;-)
Good man!
Noted! I will use this tag only if the content is directly related to the platform.
You are right, of course. But it is so tempting :)
This is such simple advice, but it should be followed to a T. Actually this system I proposed would allow users to see why their content was flagged and if it is spam or tagged incorrectly the poster would be able to see why.
I strongly dislike the current flagging system, because people can simply disagree or be jealous of your content, flag it, and not be held accountable.
I'm sure you have some of your own ideas that would be incredibly valuable to perfect the system I'm proposing New Content Flagging Content System With Feedback
At this point I value your comments on posts as much as upvotes. I know a comment being upvoted by you is valuable, but that can't be expected to happen often unless a user consistently creates thought provoking content or something far beyond a simple sentence.
Your comments on my proposed flagging system overhaul can open a dialogue with all users because you are followed not only because of your whale title, but because you are so heavily invested, you want to do what's best long term for steemit.
A short term gain pales in comparison to creating a system that keeps users happy and engaged and will pay dividends tenfold or more as new users join and add their unique voice without fear that disagreeing or offering an opposing viewpoint will cause them to be flagged.
I think honest critical discussions can occur when a tarnished reputation doesn't when people can be real and raw. Discussions like those between @steve-walschot and @dollarvigilante on the Are We Only Here To Feed The Narcissists post.
Hopefully this system is as important to you as I, but I realize your whale song reaches more users than my simple minnow splashing.
(By the way if you wish to return and run for office against Hillary, you will have my vote @berniesanders)
Using steemit is not very smart anyway, It is overused and your posts barely make an appearance for a few second.
This has started to get on my nerves a tad as well.
That's it! Crack the whip! Don't put up with this shit. I fully support any measure to combat the people abusing the system.
Keep Steemit A Great Place To Blog!
The # steemit tag should only be used on posts that are actually about Steemit. That's the point of tags - to indicate the subject(s) of a post. I agree with you that flags are appropriate for repeat offenders and abusers.
@dan Is gonna regulate I'm sure.
Is it ok to use #steemit so long as the post references steemit or mentions it?
Of course.
I'm getting to the point now where if I post some photography I'm only going to tag it photography. I too have been guilty of using the tags just to boost my posts exposure. Ultimately it's not good for the overall Steemit experience!
Precisely! Don't muck up #photography, it's one of my favorite categories!
Mine too!
Agreed, previously guilty. Nice honesty @theyam and nice photos too.
Thank you!
To be fair, the situation has improved dramatically with the 5 tag limit, Dan's warning and the Reputation system.
But some miscreants continue to tag inappropriately. Personally, I'm more frustrated by people tagging stuff in the wrong sections beyond #steemit. For example, as 'science' or 'writing' just because they are vaguely about the world or their post has some text!
Would you say a flag is appropriate? Personally, I'm not sure the first time or a newbie, but for a repeat offender, most certainly.
Personally I think a flag is appropriate for repeat offenders but everyone has the right to do as they please with their votes so that's your decision to make.
Agreed, thanks for your input. :)
hello @berniesanders everytime I'm having hard times choosing the right tag for my post. For instance, if I make a post invitation is it alright to use #steemit, if not what would you suggest? Is #social would me alright?
Does this count just for posts or for comments as well?
I don't know if tags within replies will show up somewhere as well or just link to the category-list/feed.
i agree, i'm pushing all the italian community to use certain tag ro raise the italian community but they keep using always the same tag to get more upvote and raise a few dollars :( that's so sad
Yes Sir! ....well unless it concerns the whole platform, no ? People will use the tag simply because there are no rules concerning tags...photography is pretty much obvious , mining , also obvious, and so many others...but some are just too vague , so people use them because they don't know any better. You said something about why not 1 tag, because for example, if i have photos of animals and i want to show them here, it makes sense to use both photography and animals tag, no ?
I would think so too. Having something like sub-categories would be nice. But I guess that's not possible with "tags".
What do you propose the Steemit community do then to address this issue? Steemit is designed in a way that promotes competitions among users so of course everyone is going to use the most popular hashtag.
Also, who's going to read every post and decides that they use the appropriate tag? The whales? But this is precisely what people are trying to do... get attention from the whales to make money.
Perhaps, there should be a way to down vote a tag and remove the post from that particular tag.
I'm curious what @ned and @dantheman think?
isn't that considered a censorship in a way if they remove it from a particular tag? Do people have to list reasons now for using those hashtags...besides the obvious ones?
If you want to get REKT post in a irrelevant tag. /the end
what's a rekt?
just edited my new maybe-not-so-relevant post to exclude this tag. thank you for a warning!
Yeah, it sucks when p[eople abuse the features.
Like, say, downvoting original content because you got a burr in your but.
Somebody poked bernie sander bear.So no more steemit hashtags unless it's promoting steemit. :) Just wanted to say my twin's sis America loves bernie!!! :) ...me...I am just saying I go for making america moving forward with diversity...and steemit to push forward as well.
Maybe there should be a limit to three categories instead of 5, less spam that way.
Why not just one category?
ouch. That hurts when you said one. I do hope they test that out quick for a couple days to see how that works out for people to get used to that.
Because we are in a 3D world. One would be so linear. I do not think my computer has that much RAM.
Yes.... I said earlier none and user voted, but I have also thought same with a single tag, others allowed with no limit, but again user suggested and voted on
yea sorry guys, I am a bit guilty of this and learning more and more as
I read.. Thanks for all the good advice!
Stop the steemit circle jerk...
so I'm able to use that tag? New blog in the making to fit into that catagory
Please do.
I used the tag today... I'm sure I didn't abuse it.
So far I only used it once and many of my tags are full on.
I hope my tag #activism and #animalrescue are getting some more traction.
Feel free to check out my recent work and comment on what you like or not.
Hope I'm doing well?
Yes I agree this is incredibly annoying. I can feel the Bern.
The Bern is no more unfortunately.... Hilary has defeated him at the Democrat convention.
Even bigger burn :)
nice pun ;)
Thanks for the heads up, I hadn't seen Dan's warning. Just removed it from my recent post so hopefully it will filter out.
Good point, and good reminder for us all. Thanks. I've got steemit on my mind, but I'll keep it off my post unless it's actually applicable.
KEEP IT CLEAN PLEASE
does anyone know how reputation works ?
Well said
Love the stopthesteemitcirclejerk
It's long but absolutely love it.
♥ #stopthesteemitcirclejerk
Well,I usually try to avoid it, I only use it if its really for steemit related stuff, like my tutorial for making 3d logo of steemit, I don't know why people keep using wrong tags, like be creative people, or powerful people will start punish everyone that deserves it.
That's why....
Im flagging those shits!
many many thanks to you ......... I had also this bad habit. But, from now I'll must stop adding #steemit for promoting my posts. hats ........... offffffffffffff !!!
Yes, of course. Steemit already got to that point were your article would be read, doesn't matter if you have 1 tag or 9.
The tags should describe the content and #steemit is describing the whole platform.
Ok, i understad to
I posted about this not long ago. I totally agree. https://steemit.com/steemit/@themax37/steemit-circlejerk
I've always thought that the #steemit tag was the the general feed on this site, I don't know why, was it the case 3 weeks ago when I joined ? I realize now that I am wrong, and I will stop using it in all my posts. Downvoting may be a bit harsh but educating is the way. I stand corrected Mr Bernie.
Absolutely right! I raised the point couple of weeks ago citing that perhaps 1 tag or category per post is sufficient to group the article accurately. On wordpress you can add category and tags.
Hashtags could've gone in the 'tag' section and the topic tag could've been a category.
It would've been easier to curate content because this organizes it better. Now you'll see stories irrelevant to steemit being tagged with it.
But, some feel 5 categories is appropriate to tag content and hence it is the way it is. People don't follow without guidelines. Hopefully we can set some moving forward so it becomes easier to curate good content and people realize the importance of appropriately organizing their work.
Let's make Steemit great again!
That is a nice point you are making about the #steemit tag getting abused too much.
What you need to also do however is also to point out what types of articles should include the #steemit tag as not to get treaded as abusers.
Here is a direct question, if I want to report a steemit bug should I use the #steemit tag or not when the post is directly related to steemit.com itself?
I too am tired of people using the #steemit hashtag so loosely. I have seen people using it in cases where the word steemit isn't even in the context of their post.
question: what do you recommend authors do to get views for content instead?
