The little village of Cape Bunga had seen its fair share of curious characters over the years, but none quite so peculiar as young Aria. While other children her age played hopscotch or read picture books, Aria could usually be found down by the farm, nattering away to the animals like they were her closest confidantes.
Her favorite companion by far was Appu, a baby elephant who had been rescued from the circus years ago. Despite his mammoth size, even for a baby elephant, Appu possessed the gentleness of a newborn lamb whenever Aria was around. The two were nearly inseparable, wandering the meadows for hours while Aria chattered Appu's large ears off.
One warm August afternoon found them strolling as usual, when a series of high-pitched cheeps caught Aria's attention. Parting the tall grass, she discovered three tiny baby birds, shivering and helpless. "Oh Appu, whatever are we to do?" she cried, carefully scooping them into her hands.
An idea struck like a bolt of lightning - Appu's keen sense of smell could track down their nest! And so began the urgent search through Bubu Woods, as the forest surrounding Cape Bunga was known. Strange hoots and rustlings emerged from the gnarled trees as Aria clung tight to Appu's back.
After a strange Bird-Squirrel's antics left them no closer to answers, Aria was beginning to lose hope. But then a familiar voice called out - "Well if it isn't my favorite elephant and his curious companion!"
Turning, they spotted Arissa the rabbit bounding their way through the underbrush. Despite her family's less respectable members, Arissa had always treated Aria with kindness. "Any sign of the nest?" she asked, eyeing the distressed fledglings.
When told of their plight, Arissa's bright eyes lit up. "I know just the cranky old coot who can help - Grumpy the bear!" Though he dwelled at the forest's scariest fringes, Grumpy knew these woods like the back of his shaggy paw.
Aria bit her lip nervously. "But what if he refuses to help?" Grumpy was notoriously short-tempered, and unlikely to spare help for strange chicks. But Arissa flashed a fearless grin. "Leave Grumpy to me! I'll smooth those ruffled furrows in no time."
And so with Arissa's spunky company and willingness to face the notorious bear, Aria felt renewed courage to continue their search. Though Appu grumbled at straying so far from home, his loyalty to Aria and the chick's plight kept him ambling onward to the forest's shadowy heart.
If anyone could win favors from the ill-tempered Grumpy, it was charming Arissa. Aria could only hope her wits matched her bravery in charming answers from the cantankerous creature lurking ahead...
At last they came upon Grumpy's smokey cave, where despite Aria's charm and Arissa's bravado, it seemed they would leave empty-handed. But then, a flash of something resembling compassion crossed Grumpy's beady eyes. "Beyond the birch glade lies what you seek," he grumbled, and with that they dashed off deeper into the misty wood.
After trudging for miles through the winding forest paths, dusk was falling fast. The weak baby birds had all but stopped cheeping. Then suddenly, the dense woods opened up to reveal...a dried up marshland?
"Where's the meadow?" cried Arissa, dashing about in confusion. Aria's heart sank - had Grumpy played a cruel trick? But then Appu swayed his great head towards a gnarled, solitary tree clinging to the muddy earth.
High in its knotted branches sat an unkempt nest, but the inhabitant was not what they'd hoped for. A haggard looking vulture glared down with cold, hungry eyes as two sparrows huddled within. The tiny birds Aria found is screaming their hearts out as though they know their parents were nearby.
"You there! Find your own camp, this meadow and these sparrows are mine!" the vulture squawked, puffing out its grotesque feathers. The baby birds tremored in fear. But Aria would not be deterred - an idea struck, as daring as it was daft.
Signaling Arissa and Appu to distract the vulture, Aria began scaling the twisted boughs with all her might. Just as the predator lunged, she grabbed the shaking sparrows and swung onto Appu's back in a single bound.
Heart pounding, she handed the tiny birds to their mother. A most unexpected twist, but the bonds of forest friends had once more proved stronger than any woods - or winged menaces within.
Aria beamed, endlessly grateful to Appu for his faithful friendship and keen nose, and to Arissa for her spunky support along the way. Their adventures through the warped woods of Bubu had only served to cement the unbreakable bonds between this peculiar trio of friends. The little village may have thought Aria strange, but to her animal comrades she was simply family.
The End.
