C H A P T E R | 2
The sun was high in the sky – it must have been around noon. My running slowed. I was getting tired. I looked around me and began recognizing some of the buildings. I knew where I was. A chill ran down my spine as I walked past the store, recalling that awful night the dark entity controlled me. That hideous memory had faded through the years, but somehow, it still left a scar behind. I looked away.
I missed Thomas. He and I had been together for such a long time, sharing one body. I had gotten used to him in my thoughts. I had never slept better, knowing he was with me always. Because Thomas knew me so well, he began whispering to me in my head at night, steering my mind away from nightmares and toward happy dreams.
I never knew it was possible to love him more, but every new day with him made my heart soar higher. I was infinitely falling softly for him. When Thomas died, I remember thinking that was it. Our love had ended. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would be ok again. When he came back to me, I was better than ok. I was...I felt whole again.
I saw my house in the distance. The sun flashed across the windowpanes of the surrounding houses as I walked. I felt a storm brewing inside me again. I missed him so much. The past few years he and I had shared every thought, every moment, every memory, every good time, every hard time, every day - everything. I wanted to see his smiling face looking out of the window, but only saw darkness behind the glass.
My foot rested on the walkway that lead to my front door. The wind whipped around me. The sun had gone down a little in the sky, changing the cool coloring of the day to a warmer hue. With each step closer to the house I drew, I shook slightly. The lights were not on. He isn’t home, I thought. He isn’t – if he was, there would be a light on. My mind started wandering through various scenarios, trying to figure out possibilities for the future before it was here.
I reached the front door and dug in my pockets for the key. I panicked. It wasn’t in my pants pockets or my jacket pockets. I grasped the doorknob and turned it. The knob turned, and the door opened. It was unlocked. I was befuddled by this – I always locked my door. My mind started making up new scenarios again. Could it be? Could he have just come here?
I looked over at the side table and saw the key resting on it. My heart leapt with hope.
“Thomas?”
