TAIPEI is know for its “quirky” novelty restaurants.
There’s a Hello Kitty diner, a restaurant where everything is made of corrugated cardboard (that is hopefully devoid of candles ... fire hazard? What fire hazard?) and a theatre restaurant filled with puppets: because there aint nothing like a puppet dangling and staring at you with its dead eyes to kill your appetite.
But the one that takes the (urinal) cake is the wonderfully named “Modern Toilet Restaurant.” It’s situated in the uber-hip Ximending area of Taipei and my god do they hammer the toilet theme home. Subtly is not on the menu.
It is one of a chain of restaurants that has grown across Taiwan from a small ice cream shop to a fully-fledged restaurant selling toilet themed food with a side of cheap laughs.Let us venture towards the S-bend and see what they have on offer. You can get your chicken in a toilet shaped bowl, because why not:
Other scrumptious dishes include “poop meatballs” and “stuffed brown sugar poop pancake”.Diners sit on toilets instead of chairs — both Asian and European style toilets are available, which is super PC for an utterly lowbrow establishment.
The restaurant reviews on Tripadvisor are mixed.“I’m sure you can find another hot pot place that is a lot better but you’re honestly paying for the experience to eat out of a crapper here,” writes user smcp415, with admirable brevity.
Pat C enthusiastically says “It’s fun with friends! Take photos! It’s funny how those that I have of other tourists look like they’re going while eating!”Then there is this head-scratcher from lykchick: “the restaurant is decorated in toilet style. Food are served in toilet bowl, taste is average but fresh feeling when eating”.
