Hey son, I know you’re getting older and sometimes that can be confusing, so I want to tell you a new story tonight.
You see this marble — that’s you. Just a simple cloudy marble.
You haven’t always been cloudy though. When you first came into this world, you were clear as can be. All of us were.
How you came into this world is interesting too. Maybe I should start there instead.
A lot of people think that the world is a circle. But the world, at least the one that we spend time in, is much more of a cone. I know, it seems like quite a silly shape for something so important. But cones are great at shining light. And light is really important to this story.
We don’t know much about where we come from or where we go after this, but we know that a whole bunch of light is involved. And that magnificent light sits at the top of our cone, which is exactly where we get dropped into this world.
Don’t worry, when you were dropped in, you didn’t fall. Not yet, at least. You stayed up towards the top of the cone. Since you didn’t have any clouds, the light could go right through you and keep you in place.
But it’s impossible to stay completely clear. Sooner or later, we all get clouds. It’s no one’s fault. In fact, the clouds are what make you, you. Your mom and I, your friends at school, all of us have clouds too.
When you have clouds, some of that light gets lost. When that happens, you start to fall down the cone a little. But don’t worry, the same thing is happening to your brother and your cousins and everyone you know.
Further down the cone, there’s actually more space. So instead of just being a floating marble, you can start to move around on your own. There’s a lot of light in your life and you’ve always done a good job of staying in it. But sometimes we all drift into dark spots and that creates some more clouds for us.
I don’t want you to worry about the clouds though. It’s natural to want things to be as simple and easy as they used to be when you were a clear marble, but I promise there’s nothing wrong with you.
This is going to keep happening to you for a while. You’ll move around and you’ll bump into new marbles. Some of the marbles will push you into the light; and your mother and I hope you keep those marbles around.
But we know that other marbles will send you away from it too. Sometimes you can be out of the light for quite some time. But I need you to always remember the light didn’t go anywhere, okay?
Look, I know that ‘falling down’ doesn’t sound as great as ‘growing up’ but it’s better that you know what really happens.
A lot of people think they’re supposed to grow up, but once they grow up, they don’t know what to do next. If you remember that you’re falling down, you’ll always know that the next thing to do is climb back up.
And trust me, the light is always there to bring us back up. As we get cloudier, the light can be harder to see. But all you have to do is clean your clouds.
Some people think they don’t have any clouds, so they get really confused when they don’t see the light anymore. They think the light went out and so they blame the world for their darkness. Other people think they just need to move faster, but that just causes them to run into more marbles.
It’s important that you remember your clouds, but it’s even more important you remember they aren’t permanent. If you focus on your own clouds, instead of other people’s clouds, you can start to wipe them away.
Once you’ve cleaned your clouds, you’ll start to see the light again.
But just because you see the light again, doesn’t mean it’s going to bring you back up. See once you’re older, you’ll have a lot of marbles around you. Those marbles can make you feel locked into place, so you might have to fight to get free. You might even have to leave some marbles behind so that you can get back into the light.
But I promise you it’s worth it. Once you get back into the light and start climbing back towards the top of the cone, you’ll feel closer to everyone and everything out there.
And I know that you’ve been at the top of the cone before, but it will be different this time around. When you first came through, it was all you knew, but now that you’ve gained your clouds and lost them again, you’ve earned your spot at the top of the cone.
Look son, I know this doesn’t seem breezy and fun like some of our other nighttime stories, but I hope you remember it. Because some days you’ll feel like a cloudy marble, and I need you to know that you can always climb back up.
Goodnight, son.
