The Odds

Her phone lit up as she received a new message from someone she didn't know.

'Ma'am, will you come to school today?'

She's not familiar with the display photo, the name, and the whole existence of this person. He's not her student but he's wearing their school uniform in his profile picture. What an odd way to approach a teacher, no proper introduction, she thought.

'My class will be later at 1:00 pm, why?'

She replied without even asking who he is. Another message pop up from the same account. She laughed, let out a sigh, and mumbled something to herself.

"According to Locard's Principle, it is impossible for a criminal to commit a crime without leaving any trace of evidences. So why do crime investigators sometimes fail to retrieve evidences from the crime scene?"

The four corners of the white and slightly brown room was filled with deafening silence despite the presence of almost thirty students who's attending their Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology Class.

"Because when these investigators are taking their Forensic 3 class they're not listening" she said while glaring at a group of students who are too busy with their phones.

They immediately sit straight and hid their phones inside their bags soon as they felt the stares not just from their teacher but also from their classmates.

"Yes Naiah" She called one of her student who raised hand to answer her question.

"Ma'am there are several factors that influence the retrieval of evidences. One, it could be because before investigators appear at the scene, evidences had been tampered or altered. Another is the lack of tools, equipment, and of course the skills and knowledge of the investigators or evidence collectors."

"Correct. That's why we can't afford to have stupid investigators who lacked skills because they were too busy playing games during class acting all smart enough not to pay attention. Do not attend my class next time if you don't have interest, okay?" she's smiling but everyone in the room felt the disappointment in her voice.

"Ma'am yes Ma'am!"
