How I Got My Sister to Buy Her First Ether

in #story7 years ago (edited)

Well to be accurate, only 0.269463 of it.

The story began exactly 2 months ago on 16th November 2017. When I bought 200 dollars worth of Bitcoin to prove my point.

I had previously spoken to her about the world of crypto to get her as excited about it as I am however, she wasn’t interested.

She didn’t have interest in the tech behind it, she didn’t have interest in the community supporting it and she didn’t have interest in the change it can bring.

In fact, she was rather dismissive and that pissed me off a bit.

So I thought, what better way to get her interested than by showing her the GAINS. But I really wanted to drive home the point and make the investment potential of crypto clear.

As a result, I decided on buying 600 dollars into a robo-advisory too. I wanted to show the contrast between the returns from cryptocurrencies and traditional investments - and to be honest, to also show myself.

Lo and behold, Bitcoin hits 10K almost 2 weeks later (29 Nov). I was genuinely surprised and elated at how quickly I can shove my little experiment in her face but of course, I ended up playing nice. She is my sister after all.

Furthermore, there were talks on how Bitcoin was in a bubble and how it may come crashing down all of a sudden and the sly part of me didn’t want to celebrate prematurely. Got to wait for the right time to strike.

Fast forward to the day that marks a month since the start of my plan (16 Dec) and I’m crying; tears of joy that is. Bitcoin stands at roughly 17,500 dollars and I’ve more than doubled the investment. What’s more, Bitcoin went on to reach its all-time high of almost 20K the very next day.

With that, SHE FINALLY GOT INTERESTED!

To be fair, it wasn’t just Bitcoin and it wasn’t just me. I had investments in other coins and they were doing pretty good themselves but the kicker was in the news and the hype it generated. Her husband was talking about it, her close friends were talking about it and heck, even her not so close friends were talking about it.

Over the next few days, I introduced her to the world of crypto as I had intended over a month ago. Expectedly, her concern was ultimately with its potential as an investment vehicle. Though a tad disappointed, it did bring attention to the crypto scene. Not just for her but for the rest of the world too.

On 3rd January 2018, her transfer came in and my first purchase for her came to be Ethereum on the very next day.

If you’re wondering about the returns I got from the robo-advisory, you can check it out below and if you factor currency impact, I actually made -0.4%.
