Aryenne was bored.
It wasn’t a common feeling for her. The city of Farlynde might not have had much to entertain children, but she rarely needed more than a book. She spent most days in the Grand Library, and since her father was the head librarian, she had access to more books than most elves could even imagine.
Unfortunately, she was running out of books.
Aryenne looked up at the tall bookshelf in front of her. She hadn’t read every book in the library yet—even she didn’t read fast enough for that—but she’d read most of the ones that interested her. This current section focused on complicated mathematics, and the few books she tried turned out to be tedious and complicated.
One day, maybe she’d change her mind about them, but there had to be other interesting sections to take books from. Yet the library had five floors, and she’d already checked out each of them…
She drew in a sharp breath and hurried out of the room with a secret smile. There was one area she never checked for books.
The winding staircase led from each floor of the library to the next, and she ran all the way down until she reached the ground floor. Then she walked to the far corner of the room, to the one staircase she never tried......
